
Zoe Nelson Records Career-High Double-Double as Ladyjacks Blast Past UTRGV

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Stephen F. Austin defeated The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, 76-42 Thursday afternoon. SFA improves to 20-4 (10-2 WAC) while UTRGV falls to 8-14 (2-9 WAC).
The Ladyjacks jumped out to a 5-0 lead off a three-pointer from Angel Scott and a layup by Avery Brittingham. UTRGV brought it to within three points, but were unable to reach the double digit mark in the first quarter, 20-9. SFA started the second quarter off the same way at the first, which extended the lead to 16 points. UTRGV made it past the double digit mark and then SFA went on a 6-0 run to bring the lead up to 19 points. UTRGV went on an 11-0 run in the last three minutes the first half due to their free throw shooting. Nine of those 11 points were from the free throw line. The Ladyjacks went into the locker room with a 10-point lead, 38-28. SFA went on a 8-0 spurt at the beginning of the third to bring the lead back up to 16 and another 6-0 run a couple minutes later. UTRGV scored the final six points of the game to make it a 14 point game going into the fourth quarter, 52-38. Nothing could go wrong for the Ladyjacks in the fourth quarter as they began the quarter on an explosive 17-0 scoring run which gave them the biggest lead of the game with 31 points. The Ladyjacks then cruised to a 34-point win against UTRGV.
SFA led UTRGV in every major stat categories; points in the paint (40-24), points off turnovers (21-14), second chance points (14-4), fast break points (11-3), bench points (32-20), field goal percentage (38.9-25.9), three-point percentage (31.3-13.3), and free throw percentage (78.9-66.7). Zoe Nelson had a day full of career-highs and recorded her first career double-double with 15 points, 15 rebounds and two steals. Aiyana Johnson led the team with 18 points and finished third on the team with seven rebounds. Brittingham followed Nelson with 11 rebounds and scored six points. Jordan Harrison finished with 13 points, five rebounds and six assists.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action at home against GCU on Saturday, February 11th at 2:00 p.m.
