NATCHITOCHES, LA - Northwestern State University defeated Stephen F. Austin 13-2 on their second head-to-head match up on the year. Northwestern improves to 4-4 while SFA falls to 3-6.
It was a night to forget for Lumberjack pitching rotation as they struggled to locate the strike zone on the mound tonight. It all started in the bottom of the first, when starter, Carter Hines, allowed two runs to score off of four walks and an eventual passed ball. The next inning, Hines was able to get two quick strikeouts, but the woes then continued by hitting the next batter on the first pitch and allowing a single to center field. The runner on second was then able to score after two consecutive wild pitches. After two innings, the Demons were up 3-0 off of just one hit.
The pitching nightmare was far from over for the Lumberjacks as Coach Cardenas started to bring in different pitchers to see if anyone could find the strike zone. However, no one was able to make a difference as the next inning for the Demons consisted of a hit-by-pitch, two walks, then a bases-clearing double to left center. Another three runs off just one hit. The Demons were able to tag along one more run in the fourth inning, thanks to another walk, single, and a RBI groundout.
The fifth inning didn't get any better for SFA as they allowed four walks out of the first five batters, allowing one to score. Then another single followed by a sacrifice fly allowed two more to score, bring the score to 10-0 NSU. It was the third time in this game where the 'Jacks allowed three runs off of one hit. Meanwhile, the SFA bats were pretty quiet up to this point, as they only had two hits through five innings.
That all changed in the top of the sixth, when Clayton Loranger was able to reach on base by an infield single. Peyton Parker then finally put the Lumberjacks on the board and brought home Loranger on a double to left field. Cody Fleischer then scored another run for the Lumberjacks in the following inning after hitting a double then scoring on a throwing error by the Demons' second basemen.
The Demons then brought the game to an early end in the bottom of the eighth inning due to the run rule. That occurred when the Demons loaded up the bases with a walk, infield single, and a hit-by-pitch then another bases-clearing double brought them all home. After that, the Demons obtained a 13-2 lead and put the run rule in place to end the game. The Demon's 13 runs came from seven hits and 13 walks.
Loranger, Parker, Fleischer, and Cal Martin all collected a hit on the evening.
The Lumberjacks now look towards their next series on the road against Oral Roberts University, with their first game on Friday, March 3 and first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
