NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Kansas State defeated Stephen F. Austin 14-8 in game three of their four game series. Kansas State starts 3-0 and SFA continues to look for their first win at 0-3.
For the third game in a row, both teams scored runs in the opening inning. Kansas State began the scoring with a bases loaded, two-run single. The Lumberjacks took little to no time responding after Clayton Loranger started things off by reaching on error and Peyton Parker following with a double. Tom Biggs kept his RBI streak going by knocking in Loranger with an infield single. Parker then reached home plate by scoring on a wild pitch. A couple of batters later, Biggs then scored when Hunter Prescher hit a groundball the shortstop couldn't handle. After the first inning, the 'Jacks led 3-2.
The scoring didn't stop there, and the Wildcats brought in three more runs in the second inning after Lumberjack's starting pitcher, Benny Emmons III, struggled on the mound and walked in two. The 'Jacks had his back though, and brought in three more runs to regain the lead at 6-5. That happened when Alex Rodgers and Loranger hit back-to-back doubles, and Parker hit the exclamation point with his first home run of the season.
For the second game in a row, the Wildcats used the top of the third to retie the ballgame, this time with a walk and a double. K-State finally took the lead in the top of the fifth, when they brought in two runs off of another double.
The Lumberjacks fought back once again, this time in the bottom of the sixth when Alex Rodgers crushed his second home run of the season, bringing the 'Jacks down by one. Biggs then knocked in Loranger on a fielder's choice, after Loranger followed Rodgers with a triple off the left-center wall.
The 8-8 score didn't last long, as Kansas State drove in four in the top of the seventh that was capped off with a three-run homer to left field. The Wildcats then tagged on two more runs in the eighth, following a string of walks and singles. From there Kansas State was able to hold off SFA for the rest of the game and take the 14-8 win, for their third victory in a row.
The top of the Lumberjacks lineup had a big day at the plate today, starting with Rodgers who went 2-for-4 that included his solo home run. Loranger went 3-for-5 at the dish and scored all three times he got on. Three-hole Parker keeps his hot start rolling by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs, and a walk. Clean up hitter Biggs picked up his sixth RBI already, just three games into the season.
The 'Jacks went through a rotation of pitchers who all seemed to struggle this afternoon. Today's pitching staff allowed 12 earned runs, 13 hits, and 12 walks.
The Lumberjacks now look to close out the series on a high-note, as they take on Kansas State one final time Monday, February 20th with first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
