A Look at the Lumberjacks
Head coach Johnny Cardenas will be heading into his 18th season of coaching the Lumberjacks.
SFA will have a lot of new faces taking the field this season as the Lumberjacks will only have 11 players returning from last year. Some notable returners include: Scout Sanders, Clayton Loranger, Cal Martin, Joe Richter, Peyton Parker, Hunter Prescher, and Benny Emmons III. Parker ended last season having the best batting average on the team with .379 and an OPS of .908. Expect Parker to put the ball in play in his at-bats as in 44 games, he recorded only 15 strikeouts. Loranger finished the 2022 campaign with a .301 average and two home runs. Prescher appreared in 22 games last year but made the most of his plate appearances, getting 11 hits on 26 at-bats. Martin finished the season with a .315 average and had the fourth-most home runs on the team with four. Sanders was able to produce a hit in roughly a quarter of his at-bats and was another one of the 'Jack's home run producers as he had three last season. Richter and Emmons III were two of the main starters for the 'Jacks in 2022 and both were able to produce a sub-2.0 WHIP.
A Look at the Wildcats
Kansas State finished the 2022 season with a 29-29 record and seventh out of nine teams in the Big 12 standings. The Wildcats struggled on the road last year only picking up six wins on 23 games.
The Lumberjacks have taken on the Wildcats three times before dating back to 2015. K-State picked up the 3-2 win in the one game previously played at Jaycees Field. SFA then split a two-games series on the Wildcats home field in 2016.
A Look at the Panthers
The Panthers finished last season with a 30-27 record and fourth in the SWAC West standings.
Before traveling to Nacogdoches to take on the 'Jacks, they're playing at Minute Maid Park to participate in the Cactus Jack HBCU Classic. During the weekend, the Panthers will take on Grambling State, Texas Southern, and Jackson State.
