NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Kansas State defeated Stephen F. Austin 16-5 to round out the series against the Lumberjacks. The Wildcats start off the season 4-0 while the 'Jacks will have to rally back from an 0-4 start.
Kansas State started the high-scoring affair in the top of the second inning with a long solo home run to left field. Then the Wildcats lengthened the gap on the Lumberjacks by launching a grand slam after a hit batter and two walks in the third inning. The 'Jacks fought back in the bottom half of the inning with RBI singles from Clayton Loranger and Tom Biggs. After three full innings, the Wildcats led 5-2.
The top of the fourth was when the Wildcats really dropped the hammer on the Lumberjacks by scoring off of a bases-loaded single and bases-loaded walk, followed by Kansas State's second grand slam of the game. The six-run inning left the score 11-2 going into the fifth.
Loranger helped the Lumberjacks get back one of their runs after scoring on a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth. But unfortunately, K-State took that run and one more back after hitting a two-run homer in the top of the sixth. Alex Rodgers drove in the fourth Lumberjack run of the game in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single through shortstop and third base. Barrett Rose knocked in his first RBI of the season in seventh with a single through the right side.
After hitting a three-run home run in the top of the ninth, the Wildcats were able to close out the game, get the 16-5 win, and get the sweep on the Lumberjacks.
The top four of the SFA lineup produced most of the offense for the Lumberjacks today, collecting nine of the eleven hits and three of the four RBIs. Rodgers and Loranger both went 2-for-3 with a walk (Loranger with two walks). Peyton Parker had another monster day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one run scored, and went 12-for-19 (.632 batting average) in the entire series against Kansas State. Biggs went 1-for-2 and picked up his seventh RBI of the season.
The Lumberjacks look to end this home stretch on a high note and get their first win of the season tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. against Prairie View A&M.
