HOUSTON, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Basketball team plays their first road game of the season as they will travel to Houston to face off against Texas Southern University.
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
Stephen F. Austin wrapped up their three-game homestand to begin the season with a loss to the UNT Mean Green. In the game against UNT, the Ladyjacks and UNT had nine lead changes throughout the game and had a pair of times the score was tied.
Kyla Deck, Kurstyn Harden, and Trinity Moore all scored in double-digits as Deck led the team with 13 points, Moore finished with 11, and Harden finished with 10. Moore provided solid bench production for Coach Bishop as she stuffed the stat sheet against UNT with 11 points, four rebounds, one block, and two steals in just 18 minutes of playtime. It was another solid defensive game for SFA as every starter for SFA recorded at least one steal, led by Deck who had five, and each played over 20 minutes against UNT. Harden came one rebound short of a double-double as she led the team with nine rebounds, while Zoe Nelson made life difficult for the UNT shooters as she had a team-leading three blocks.
The Ladyjacks defense provided another solid effort as they finished in total with 14 steals, in comparison to UNT's one steal, and pulled down 31 rebounds as a team. The 'Jacks were able to get solid scoring in the paint as they finished with 30 points in the paint and converted their 14 steals into 20 points off turnovers. This is the third straight game that SFA has recorded double-digit steals, and they will look to keep that streak going against Texas Southern.
The Ladyjacks will carry a 1-2 overall record and a 0-0 away record into this game against the Tigers.
Tigers at a Glance:
The Texas Southern Tigers will return home after a two-game roadtrip looking to bounce back after a tough loss to the defending champ LSU Tigers.
Two players scored in double-digits for Texas Southern against LSU as Daeja Holmes and Taniya Lawson both finished with 11 points. Jaida Belton provided production all over the floor for the Tigers as she pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds, tied for the team lead in blocks with two, and led the team with four steals while playing the second most minutes of any Texas Southern player.
Overall, Texas Southern finished with 20 points in the paint and got excellent production from their bench as they finished with 27 points off the bench while also posting 33 rebounds, six blocks, and nine steals as a team.
The Tigers will carry a 1-3 overall record and a 1-0 home record into this match against SFA. In their first home game of the season, the Tigers handily defeated North American by a score of 109-67.
Series: This will be the sixth meeting between Texas Southern and SFA. SFA currently leads the series 4-1 as these two schools met just last year, which saw the Ladyjacks dominate at home with a 100-63 victory over the Tigers.
