The last two meetings took place in Nacogdoches, where SFA earned a 73–52 victory in 2021 and an 82–78 win last season. Tuesday marks the Ladyjacks' first trip to Houston since a 61–59 loss on Dec. 11, 2020.
Last season's matchup was tied at 75 with three minutes remaining before SFA closed on a 7–3 run. Myka Perry scored 20 points, Cha Gardner added 13 points and six rebounds, and Lydia Cajuste and Anika Hyland each recorded five assists.
2. AN OPENING PERFORMANCE FOR THE RECORD BOOK
The Ladyjacks opened with a 136–41 victory over Dallas, establishing the largest winning margin in program history.
The 95-point margin surpassed SFA's 91-point win over Arlington Baptist on Nov. 20, 2021. The Ladyjacks finished one point shy of the program scoring record of 137 and two field goals short of the school record of 56, both set in that Arlington Baptist game.
SFA led 73–18 at halftime, scored at least 31 points in every quarter and shot 64.3 percent from the field. Eight Ladyjacks reached double figures as SFA earned its sixth consecutive season-opening victory.
3. FRESHMEN MAKE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT
All four Ladyjacks freshmen scored in double figures in their collegiate debuts, combining for 55 points against Dallas. That accounted for 40.4 percent of SFA's scoring.
Braylee Winfrey led the group with 19 points and a team-high nine rebounds, adding five steals. Alex Crouse contributed 13 points, five assists, and six steals. Katie Fox finished with 13 points and four assists, while KJ Pinchon added 10 points and four rebounds.
The quartet shot 21-for-32 from the floor, a 65.6 percent clip, and combined for 18 rebounds, 12 assists and 14 steals.
4. PERRY HAS 500 IN SIGHT
Myka Perry enters the Houston game nine points away from reaching 500 for her collegiate career.
The junior scored a 2026 game-high 22 points against Dallas, raising her career total to 491, including 425 at SFA. Perry shot 9-for-12, matching her career high for made field goals and finishing one point shy of her career scoring high.
She also collected seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Perry led SFA in scoring in last season's Houston victory and has now led the Ladyjacks in back-to-back season openers.
5. MAKING EVERY POSSESSION COUNT
SFA won last season's Houston matchup despite committing 31 turnovers. The Ladyjacks enter this year's meeting after recording 35 assists against 17 turnovers in the opener, while Houston committed 25 turnovers in its latest win over Sam Houston.
Gardner helped direct SFA's offense with a career-high eight assists and one turnover against Dallas. Crouse added five assists against one turnover, and every Ladyjack who played recorded an assist.
The Ladyjacks also created extra opportunities defensively, forcing 39 turnovers and collecting 29 steals. Cajuste established a career high with six steals, matching Crouse for the game lead, as the Ladyjacks built a 61–7 advantage in points off turnovers.
6. PRODUCTION BEYOND THE STARTING FIVE
SFA's reserves combined for 59 points against Dallas, with all five players who came off the bench contributing to the scoring.
Faith Acker led the group with 16 points, followed by Cajuste with 14, Fox with 13, Pinchon with 10, and Taja Bennett with six. The reserves also combined for 22 rebounds and 13 assists.
Acker shot 8-for-11 and added six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block without committing a turnover. Her SFA debut pushed her past 600 collegiate points. She enters Tuesday with 607 points, 397 rebounds and 67 blocks, needing three rebounds to reach 400.
7. NEW SOURCES OF PERIMETER PRODUCTION
Seven Ladyjacks made a three against Dallas. Hyland and Pinchon led the team with two apiece, while Perry, Winfrey, Crouse, Fox and Bennett each connected once.
Hyland matched her career scoring high with 14 points in her first collegiate start after making 31 appearances off the bench last season. She established a career high with six made field goals and added four assists and three steals.
8. FINISHING POSSESSIONS ON THE GLASS
SFA collected 51 rebounds in its opener, led by freshman Winfrey's nine. Bennett added eight, Perry grabbed seven, and Acker finished with six as the Ladyjacks held a 51–30 advantage on the boards.
The Ladyjacks also scored 18 second-chance points and 86 points in the paint against Dallas.
Houston presents another rebounding test after collecting 50 boards and outrebounding Sam Houston by 20. Raegan McCowan recorded 10 rebounds in that victory, following Elodie Lutbert's 13-rebound performance against Hampton.
9. BISHOP BUILDS ON A STRONG FOUNDATION
Leonard Bishop enters Tuesday with a 77–28 record and a .733 winning percentage as SFA's head coach.
Now in his fourth season, Bishop has guided the Ladyjacks to at least 20 victories in each of his first three campaigns. SFA finished 25–10 last season, won its second consecutive Southland Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
SFA recently announced Bishop's contract extension through the 2030–31 season on Nov. 3. He enters the Houston game 23 victories away from 100 as the Ladyjacks' head coach.
