NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks defeated the Southern Utah Thunderbirds 2-1 on Senior Day Sunday afternoon.
The SFA Lumberjacks wrapped up their home schedule on Sunday afternoon by honoring four seniors for Senior Day. Briana Beaty, Jamie Jezierski, Mariona Garcia Dalmases, and Kyra Guhl were all honored for their final home game in an SFA jersey. The first half saw the Thunderbirds strike early as Laney Kimble scored in the second minute of the game to put Southern Utah ahead 1-0. However, that would be all the scoring Southern Utah would have as Lydia Sattler pitched a shutout in goal the remainder of the game for SFA. At halftime, the Thunderbirds led 1-0 but Jayme Bailey had other plans for this one for the second half. In the 52nd minute of the game, the dynamic duo of Ava Shannon and Jayme Bailey hooked up again for SFA as Shannon crossed a pass to Bailey who snuck it past Southern Utah's goalie Julia Ortega to knot the score up at 1. That score would stand up until the final minute of the game when the Lumberjacks would not be denied a home win on Senior Day. Lily Hargrove made a big time play as she fed a pass to Jayme Bailey on a free kick and Bailey was able to bury it past Ortega to put the 'Jacks ahead 2-1 and seal the game for the Lumberjacks.
Lydia Sattler faced a barrage of shots today from the Thunderbirds but held her own as she tacked on another six saves to her season total and played the full 90 minutes for SFA. Sattler made some big time saves today, including one in the 61st minute, to keep the Thunderbirds off the board and allow SFA to end their home schedule with a solid win. Jayme Bailey scored two more goals today to extend her team lead to four goals as well as expanding her lead in points to nine. Ava Shannon picked up her third assist of the season on the first Bailey goal, while Hargrove tallied her first assist of the season on the game winning Bailey goal. Ella Morgan, Jamie Jezierski, and Tiana Thompson all played the full 90 minutes for SFA. The Lumberjacks carried over that offensive confidence from the Utah Tech game on Thursday as they tallied 13 total shots and seven shots on goal to keep Southern Utah on their toes all game.
The Lumberjacks hit the road to end their season as they begin a three-game road trip beginning with a trip to Riverside, California to match up with the California Baptist Lancers on Thursday, October 12th at 9:00 p.m. CT.
