NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball program is looking to go for their sixth straight win, fourth straight conference win this season, and 14th straight regular season conference win this Saturday against Grand Canyon.
Lumberjacks Statistical Analysis
The Lumberjacks are hotter than ever as they are currently on a five-game winning streak and have won seven out of their last eight after starting the season 4-4. During this five game winning streak, the 'Jacks have scored an average of 74.6 points and allowed an average of 62 points.
It has been 344 days since the last time the Lumberjacks lost a regular season conference game. Ten different WAC opponents have tried to take down the 'Jacks during the regular season, but none have been able to prevail. SFA currently sits at the top of the WAC standings as one of five teams left undefeated in the conference and the only team that's 3-0 so far.
After last game's stellar performance, Latrell Jossell puts himself back in the lead for best three point percentage in the conference with 45.5% He also enters the top 20 of best three point percentages in the country, currently sitting at 17th. Now averaging 12.8 points per game, opposing defensives have to be careful leaving Jossell open beyond the arc.
Sadaidriene Hall continues to be the offensive leader for the 'Jacks, averaging 13.7 points per game and making a little over half of his shots with a 59.7% field goal percentage, which leads the conference. Hall just needs to make eight more baskets to reach 100 field goals made on the year.
A Look at the Lopes
The Lopes come into the William R. Johnson Coliseum as their second stop of their road trip. They take on Sam Houston tonight before making their way to Nacogdoches. Prior to their match against the Bearkats, they have a 10-4 record and have just played and won their first conference game against California Baptist. The Lopes are also on a hot streak, winning their last three games before this road trip.
Don't expect this game to be a high-scoring one as the Lopes defensive isn't one to be looked over. Their opponents have the 13th lowest field goal percentage in the country with 37.7% of their opponents shots going in.
The Lopes haven't been beaten much this year, but when they do, they beat themselves. The Lopes lead the conference when it comes to both fouls per game and turnovers per game. Lumberjacks have to be ready to take advantage of their mistakes to take control of the game.
Ray Harrison leads the way for the Lopes offensively, averaging 13.9 points per game. Watch for him to be a threat from in the paint and beyond the arc as he leads the team with attempts from both areas of the court.
Last Match Against the Lopes: Lumberjacks Dominate GCU in WRJ, 71-46
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks displayed balance, grit and depth across the entire 40 minutes tonight in WRJ, delivering a 71-46 quality victory over Grand Canyon for another Western Athletic Conference triumph. The 'Jacks improve to 12-6, 4-2 in the WAC.
SFA represented a textbook team win as Latrell Jossell continued his consistent shooting from beyond the arc for 16 points (4-5 3-pt.), followed by Gavin Kensmil (13p/6r/1a/3s), Jaylin Jackson-Posey (13p/4r/1b), and David Kachelries (10p/4r/5a1s).
The 'Jacks held a 32-31 edge at the half with energy in their favor despite the Lopes climbing back to cut it to one, but Kensmil and Kachelries opened up the second half each scoring a bucket to force an early GCU timeout, as the 'Jacks didn't look back from that point on. SFA ultimately delivered offense through its defense outscoring the Lopes 20-2 in Points Off Turnovers, Paint Points (36-16) and Second Chance Points (16-4) to generate effective possessions and remain in front. The Lumberjacks limited GCU to just five made field goals in the second half, turning over its opponent 20 times for a team-high in Turnovers Forced in WAC play thus far for the 'Jacks.
Last SFA Match: Lumberjacks Roll Past New Mexico State to Stay Undefeated in Conference
Stephen F. Austin defeated New Mexico State 69-60 to win their fifth consecutive game and 13th consecutive regular season conference game. The Lumberjacks improve to 11-5 (3-0) and the Aggies fall to 7-8 (0-3).
It was a strong defense outing for the Lumberjacks tonight and it started right from the get-go. After allowing an opening layup, the defense locked up and the 'Jacks went on an 11 point run and didn't allow the Aggies to score again for another seven minutes. As the first half continues, the Lumberjacks grew their lead all the way to 30-14 and everything seemed to be going their way. However, momentum seemed to switch sides as the Aggies cut the lead down to 31-24 and ended the half on a eight point run following a couple of three pointers from Xavier Pinson. The Aggie's ability to get the offensive rebounds played a major role in them getting back in the game as they were able to outscore the 'Jacks 11-3 in offensive rebounds in the first half.
Four minutes into the second half, the Lumberjacks were able to regain a double-digit lead over the Aggies, but then after a couple of consecutive deep three's and free throws, the Aggies found themselves behind by only one possession. That small point margin didn't last long as both Nana Antwi-Boasiako and Latrell Jossell nailed back-to-back three's to give the 'Jacks a comfortable lead once again. The biggest defensive highlight of the night came with 12:49 remaining on the clock when Jaylin Jackson-Posey, who was making his first game back from injury, threw up a monster block on DaJuan Gordon who was attempting to go for a dunk. The Lumberjacks were able to ride out most of the second half with a double-digit lead thanks to Jossell who was on fire beyond the arc, and made three additional three pointers. To put the cherry on top of the 'Jack's dominate performance, Nana recovered an offensive rebound within the last minute and threw down a powerful dunk to put the game away.
Sadaidriene Hall recorded his seventh game of scoring at least 15 points and lead the Lumberjacks with 18 points, along with four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and three blocks. Jossell dominated from deep, scoring 15 points on five three-pointers, four of them coming in clutch in the second half. Roti Ware put down his fifth double-digit scoring performance of the year, putting 11 points on the board as well as three rebounds and a team-leading four assists. Nana showed his range tonight and recorded ten points, five assists, and a block.
The Lumberjacks lead in the following statistical categories: field goal percentage (42.4-39.0), three point percentage (35.0-31.6), free throw percentage (63.2-53.3), blocks (6-3), fast break points (6-2), steals (7-3), points off turnovers (18-8), and second chance points (12-11).
