Volleyball Falls to Bearkats in Five

HUNTSVILLE, Texas- Sam Houston defeated Stephen F. Austin, 3-2 Saturday afternoon to finish the first weekend of conference play.
SHSU jumped out to an early lead winning the first two sets (22-25, 23-25), but SFA fought back winning the third and fourth sets (25-23, 25-17). The Bearkats dominated the fifth set jumping out to a 6-0 lead and rode that lead to a final score of 15-6 in the fifth set. The Ladyjacks led in every stat category except aces.
Three Ladyjacks recorded double-doubles on the match; Leah Powell with 13 kills and 21 digs, Ariana Pagan with 11 kills and 13 digs, and Jayden Flynn with 34 assists and 10 digs. Flynn's 34 assists was a season-high, while Maddy Bourque also accumulated 24 assists on the day. Payton Cerny, Ielan Bradley, and Izabella Ortiz all tallied double digit kills as well, recording 18, 13, and 10 kills respectively. Ortiz recorded a career high seven block assists. Kelsey Harrington, Powell, and Pagan all recorded four block assists and Powell had a solo block. Haley Hoang led the Ladyjacks with 35 digs, which is tied for 8th most in a match in program history.
SFA will head on the road for their games next week starting with Tarleton State on Thursday, September 29th at 6 p.m.
