Volleyball Wins Home Opener Against North Texas

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball team defeated North Texas 3-1 as they hosted their first game in Shelton Gym of the 2022 season.
SFA won the sets one and two (25-22, 28-26), but UNT rebounded in the third set (22-25). In the fourth set, the Mean Green jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Ladyjacks tied it up at 5 all the match went back and forth as the teams traded points until SFA went on a three-point run to make the score 16-11. SFA maintained a four-point lead and then went on another three-point run, which brought the score to 22-14. UNT earned two more points while a kill by Ielan Bradley and a solo block by Izabella Ortiz secured the win for SFA.
Leah Powell led the team with 14 kills, followed by Ielan Bradley with 12. Jayden Flynn added 24 assists, followed by Maddy Bourque who recorded 22.
Reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week, Haley Hoang led the team with 21 digs while Bourque added 13.
The volleyball team will be back at home on Friday, September 2nd at 11 a.m. for the first match of the SFA Hampton Inn Invitational against McNeese State. SFA will also be playing the University of South Alabama at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Ladyjacks final game of the tournament will be against the University of Tulsa at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 3rd.
