Volleyball Soars Past Thunderbirds in Four Sets

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Stephen F. Austin defeated Southern Utah 3-1 on Thursday night. SFA improves to 22-4 (10-3 WAC) while SUU falls to 7-15 (6-7 WAC).
In the first set, SFA went on a four-point run late in the set to extend their lead to 19-13 and went on to win the first set 25-18. Southern Utah went on a five-point run in the second set to take a 9-6 lead then SFA went on a four point run to take the lead back, 10-9. The teams traded points until the score was tied at 21, then the Thunderbirds finished the set on a 4-1 scoring run to win the set 25-22. In the third set SFA had two four-points runs as they ran away with the set, 25-16. The fourth set was much closer even with a couple of three-point runs which carried the Ladyjacks to a 25-19 win.
SFA led in points (78-62), kills (55-49), aces (13-3), assists (50-46), and digs (69-64). The 13 aces that the Ladyjacks had is a season high for the team, five of which came from Jayden Flynn. Ielan Bradley and Izabella Ortiz tied for the lead with 11 kills, which includes Bradley's 300th kill of the season. Maddy Bourque led the team with 24 assists followed by Flynn who recorded 17. Bourque also reached 1,500 career assists in the first set which moved her into 10th place in the record book for most career assists in SFA history. Kelsey Harrington recorded six blocks (one solo), followed by Payton Cerny who had four. On the defensive side, Haley Hoang recorded 21 digs, followed by Camryn Hill who had 15.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action at home on Saturday, November 12th at 12 p.m. as they face off against Utah Tech for Senior Day.
