Rankings: SFA – FCS Coaches: No. 19; STATS PERFORM FCS Top 25: RV
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The No. 19-ranked Stephen F. Austin football team hosts Utah Tech on Homecoming for an important Western Athletic Conference match-up. It's only the second time these two football programs meet on the gridiron. The inaugural bout was last season and the 'Jacks defeated Utah Tech 37-20. The 'Jacks sport the longest home winning streak among NCAA Division I teams in Texas at 13. The streak is also second nationally in the FCS.
Gipson earns WAC Offensive Player of the Week
It was no surprise that All-American Xavier Gipson was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week. Gipson set the school record with 256 receiving yards on 10 receptions to go along with two touchdowns in the 41-38 win over Southern Utah. The senior leads the conference with 787 receiving yards and ranks second nationally at the FCS level. He is just 13 yards behind Fotis Kokosioulis of Fordham.
SFA Ranked No. 19 in FCS Coaches Poll
The Lumberjacks moved up one spot to No. 19 in the FCS Coaches Poll. SFA has been ranked in each coaches poll this season. The 'Jacks are receiving votes in the STATS Perform Top 25 Poll.
Lumberjacks Remain No. 1 in ASUN/WAC Power Rankings
SFA remained No. 1 in the ASUN/WAC Power Rankings. The 'Jacks sport a .08820 rating, and ACU ranks second with a 0.7163, Austin Peay checks in at third with a 0.7146, Eastern Kentucky is fourth with a 0.6915, and Tarleton is fifth with a 0.6766. Tarleton, Utah Tech, Sam Houston, and Jacksonville State are ineligible for the FCS Playoffs.
All About the 'Jacks
Big Play Zay
By the time Xavier Gipson departs SFA for the NFL, his name will be atop the SFA record books in several categories. He is at 3945 career receiving yards and adds to his school record each game. The Dallas, Texas native is 55 yards away from 4000 career receiving yards. Gipson is currently at 36 career receiving touchdowns and is just four away from breaking the school record of 39, which is held by Cordell Roberson. Prior to the game on Saturday, Roberson will present Gipson with a trophy recognizing Gipson as the SFA career leader in receiving yards.
Running Attack
The Lumberjack offense is heating up at the perfect time and the running game is a large part of that. Over the course of the past two games, the 'Jacks have rushed for 495 yards. 257 yards versus SUU, and 238 yards versus Tarleton. Miles Reed rushed for a career-high 137 yards in the win over Tarleton, which was also the 'Jacks first 100-yard rusher of the season. Jerrell Wimbley gashed the SUU defense with a career-high 145 yards. It's important to point out the play of the Lumberjack offensive line for creating holes and space for Reed, Wimbley and the running game to have success.
Winning on Special Teams
Since Coach Carthel assumed the head coaching role at SFA, quality special teams have been a trademark. This past week at SUU, the 'Jacks were 2-for-2 on trick plays. Facing a 4th-and-8 from its own 27-yardline in the first quarter, defensive lineman Ky Thomas took the direct snap and ran for a gain of 40 yards and into SUU territory. Lawton Rikel closed out the drive and scored on an end-around from three yards out.
After scoring the go-ahead touchdown at 12:05 in the second quarter, Dylan Brown successfully executed the onside kick and the 'Jacks were once again in scoring position. The very next play Trae Self found Gipson from 54 yards out. The two trick plays resulted directly into 14 points.
Thomas also blocked an extra point in the first quarter, which resulted in the Thunderbirds chasing points for the remainder of the contest.
The special team's unit has blocked five kicks this year and that ranks first in the WAC and fifth nationally in the FCS.
Special teams were huge in the win over Abilene Christian. Gipson's 54-yard return off ACU's missed field goal, and Chris Campos 51-yard field goal on the final play of the game proved to be the difference.
The 'Jacks lead the nation with an average of 35.89 yards per punt return.
All Eyes on Xavier Gipson
Prior to the season Gipson received several All-American accolades and was named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List. Gipson is peaking at the perfect time and is second nationally in the FCS with 787 receiving yards. He is primed for a big game on Saturday versus a Utah Tech defense that last season he torched for a then-career-high 208 receiving yards. Another big game will add to Gipson's candidacy for the Walter Payton Award.
Spreading the Ball Around
Xavier Gipson receives a lot of attention, and rightfully so. The SFA receiving corps is deep behind Gipson. 17 different student-athletes have recorded a reception this season. Moe Wedman is second on the squad with 341 receiving yards and five touchdowns Darrye Simmons has recorded 188 yards and one touchdown. Lawton Rikel has tallied 10 receptions for 133 yards and three touchdowns, Jeremiah Miller sports 132 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and Wimbley has been a crucial pass catcher out of the backfield with 128 yards and one touchdown.
Self Continues to Rise
Self is playing his best football at the right time. The senior leads the ASUN/WAC in passing efficiency with a rating of 146.4 and passing touchdowns with 16. The North Richland Hills, Texas product also ranks in the top 30 nationally in the FCS if both statistical categories.
Stopping the Pass
The Lumberjack passing defense ranks second in the ASUN/WAC in Team Passing Efficiency with a rating of 116.99. SFA is first in the ASUN/WAC with five interceptions and ranks 31st nationally in the FCS.
Last Season vs. Utah Tech (Oct. 23, 2021)
The SFA football team got back to its winning ways with a balanced team effort in a 37-20 win over Dixie State in St. George, Utah on Saturday night. SFA improves to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in WAC play with the victory.
The 'Jacks jumped out to a 20-0 lead before giving up a score to DSU, and outscored the hosts in the second half to stave off any hope off a comeback effort. Trae Self was 20-30 for 326 yards and three touchdown passes in the contest, while Miles Reed totaled 103 yards on the ground to pace SFA's multi-faceted offense. Wideout Xavier Gipson surpassed his previous career-high of 177 yards by hauling in eight receptions for 208 yards and a pair of scores.
A look at Utah Tech
Utah Tech enters with a 1-6 overall record and 0-2 record in WAC play. UTU is in the midst of reclassifying from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I.
The Trailblazers utilize a spread offense that prefers to pass first, run second. The UTU offense is putting up an average of 376.7 yards per game and 5.2 yards per play. The offense has tallied 20 touchdowns, while the defense has allowed 27.
UTU has played three different quarterbacks this season. Kobe Tracy has been the most effective with 1244 passing yards, nine touchdowns and just three interceptions. Victor Gabalis has passed for 496 yards with two touchdowns and eight interceptions, and Boone Abbott has passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. As a team, the Trailblazers are averaging 280.29 passing yards per game.
The Trailblazers' rushing attack will run through Quali Conley. The Fresno, California native leads the team with 533 rushing yards. There is not a lot of experienced depth behind Conley, with Jeter Fenton second on the squad with 53 rushing yards.
UTU's big-play offensive threat on offense is wide receiver Joey Hobert. The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder leads the team with 765 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Other wideouts to look for are Rickie Johnson (294 receiving yards), David Fisher (206 receiving yards), and Deven Osborne (197 receiving yards).
On defense, defensive back Tyrell Grayson leads the way with 57 tackles and one interception. Linebacker Malaki Malaki has totaled 53 tackles, one tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
