
Ladyjacks Wrassle Vaqueros for First WAC Win in Program History, 3-1

EDINBURG, Texas – The Ladyjack volleyball team handled UTRGV in four sets on Saturday in Edinburg to earn its first ever win as a Western Athletic Conference program, 3-1. SFA took the opening set by a 25-21 score, fell 25-14 in the second set, then rattle off 25-19 and 25-20 decisions in the final two sets to wrap up the league victory.
SET ONE
SFA got off to a quick 3-0 start in the opening frame, but the set then settled in a back and forth affair, with SFA holding a narrow 15-14 lead halfway through the frame thanks to a 4-0 run. After UTRGV tied it up at 15-15, SFA strung together another 4-0 run, bolstered by a kill and service ace from Valeria Rosado and a block by Hailey Hunt and Taya Mitchell. After the Vaqueros trimmed the lead down to one point at 22-21, another Rosado kill, a Mitchell and Ielan Bradley block and a Bradley kill finished out the set for SFA, 25-21.
SET TWO
UTRGV could do no wrong in the second stanza, hitting .484 in the frame compared to .152 by SFA, hammering down 19 kills en route to a 25-14 victory to even the match at 1-1.
SET THREE
After the Vaqueros started the fourth set with a 3-1 lead, the 'Jacks responded with four consecutive points, including a pair of blocks by Mitchell and Bradley, as well as a block and a kill by Leah Powell. The 'Jacks kept that lead the rest of the way, holding UTRGV at a distance while keeping the heat on with kills by Powell and Peyton Cerny and a pair of Vaquero service errors. SFA then jumped ahead 20-14 on the strength of three Cerny kills, and won four of the last five points in the set with a Kodi Garcia ace and a Rosado kill as well as two UTRGV errors.
SET FOUR
The Vaqueros once again jumped out to an early lead in the decisive fourth set, but the 'Jacks would tie it up with a Powell and Mitchell block after two errors. The match featured back and forth play before the teams arrived at an 18-18 tie. After the hosts won two of the next three points to take a narrow 20-19 lead, SFA rattled off six points in a row to seal the 25-20 victory, including kills by Powell, Rosado and Mitchell and a service ace from Ariana Pagan.

• Rosado led the 'Jacks with 11 kills, while Cerny added eight and Powell, six.
