TULSA, OK -- The SFA Volleyball team eked out a 28-26 victory in the opening set to gain the early momentum and took care of business in the next two sets to sweep the Eagles of Oral Roberts on Friday evening at the Tulsa Invitational. The victory was SFA's second of the day and the first straight sets victory of the campaign for the 'Jacks, who improved to 5-2 on the season with the win.
SFA hit .267 as a team in the match, compiling 44 kills in all. ORU hit just .155 in the match and had half as many errors (21) as kills (43).
SET ONE
The grittiest set of them all, the opening frame saw SFA repeatedly take the lead, only to have the Eagles tie it back up. ORU strung together five consecutive points to take a 12-7 lead, then SFA mounted a comeback to get it to 13-12 midway through the set. The close play continued, with neither side building out an advantage of more than a couple points the remainder of the way. SFA capitalized on a late momentum surge to win five of the last seven points, coming back from 23-24 thanks to three Eagle errors and a pair of Ielan Bradley kills.
SET TWO
In the second set, the 'Jacks would take their first lead (5-4) on a Bradley kill, then proceeded to trade it back and forth with ORU for the next several minutes. The 'Jacks used an 8-2 run to turn an 11-11 tie into an 19-13 lead, thanks to kills by Ariana Pagan, Bradley, Leah Powell and Ashley Procious. The 'Jacks then pushed the lead out to 21-14, at which point the Eagles made a three-point push to come within 21-17. SFA kept its cool, however, and after two ORU errors, Payton Cerny came up with a kill and a block to seal the 25-18 victory for the 'Jacks.
SET THREE
SFA jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the third set and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way, keeping ORU at a distance while they built the lead out to as much as eight points, with the secon such lead coming off a pair of Pagan kills to open up a 22-14 margin. From there, SFA closed out the set and match with two more Pagan kills and an Eagle error, their tenth of the set, to earn the 25-20 decision.
