8/29/2021 4:46:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Defender Paige Kanipes darted through a scrum in front of the net and fired home a short volley in the 83rd minute of play to lift SFA over visiting Texas State on Sunday in dramatic fashion, 2-1. The goal, the first of Kanipes' career, boosted SFA to its first win of the 2021 campaign, bringing their record to 1-2-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Lumberjacks very nearly scored the game's first goal on a Carli Arthurs header in the sixth minute of play, the home side found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard after Texas State capitalized on a corner kick seven minutes later. The margin would carry for nearly thiry minutes before the Lumberjacks found an equalizer just before the first half of play came to a close. Kamryn Jiles, playing in her first career game for the Purple and White, scored just five minutes after entering the game in the 37th minute as a substitute.
A corner kick service off the foot of Hailey Kloc found a charging Jiles on the front post, who knocked the ball into the net from close range to level the contest and earn both players their first collegiate points.
The second half would contian numerous scoring chances for the 'Jacks, none of which found paydirt until another corner kick in the 83rd minute of play. A service into the box floated perfectly in front of the net, then richoceted off the far post and out towards a waiting Kanipes, who converted the chance for the game-winning goal.
SFA earned nine corner kicks and 13 total shots in the contest, with Arthurs' three shots pacing the Lumberjack offense. Madeline Talbot earned the win inbetween the sticks, making four saves in 90 minutes of action.
