NACOGDOCHES, Texas – SFA Director of Athletics announced this week the hiring of Robert Hansen as the new head coach of the Lumberjack and Ladyjack Cross Country teams. Hansen, a native of Wisconsin, comes to SFA after serving as an assistant coach at UC-Riverside for the past five seasons.
While at Riverside, Hansen helped guide the Highlanders' distance group to strong levels of individual success, including nine NCAA Qualifiers, five USA junior national qualifiers and a total of five school records broken. Additionally, Hansen's time at UC-Riverside included coaching four NCAA All-Academic selections, nine conference All-Academic team selections and landing his men's XC team within the top 10% in NCAA APR over a four-year stretch.
"Firstly I want to thank Ryan Ivey, Brandi Bryant and Coach Phil Olson for trusting me to lead the Cross Country program. My wife, children and I already feel so much at home here in such a short time. From the first conversations I had to the first visit on campus, I could feel the passion, energy and excitement surrounding SFA Athletics. I am grateful to be a part of the Nacogdoches community and I can't wait to continue building on the foundation of success here at SFA."
Prior to his time at UC-Riverside, Hansen spent four years at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, serve as the assistant coach for men's and women's cross country and track and field. While in Edinburg, Hansen helped rebuild the program's APR scores in the classroom while also helping UTRGV runners break seven school records, earn 13 WAC Athlete of the Week accolades and get tabbed for 19 All-WAC awards.
Before joining UTRGV, Hansen was a volunteer assistant coach at both the University of Arkansas (2012-13) and University of Louisiana-Monroe (2011-12), and was a graduate assistant coach with McNeese from 2010-2011.
Hansen and his wife, Lucy, wed in 2015 and have two kids, a son, William, and daughter, Victoria.
