NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA Ladyjack softball team split a doubleheader with league for Houston Baptist inside SFA Softball Field on Friday night, dropping the opener by a 3-1 count in 11 innings before roaring back to seize the nightcap by a 5-4 margin. SFA improves to 33-10 overall and 24-2 in league play with the split, and will look to win the series in the final game tomorrow afternoon, during which the team will also recognize its 2021 senior class.
GAME ONE | 3-1 Defeat (11 Innings)
A battle between two stellar pitchers raged all afternoon, as HBU starter Jessica Patak equaled the skill of Kassidy Wilbur in the circle. After SFA pushed a run across in the second inning, HBU would answer in the fourth with a run of their own to tie the game up at 1-1. Try as they might, neither team's offense could must a winning run against either starter in the next three innings or the three after that, taking the game well past its normal duration.
SFA appeared to have won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Shaylon Govan hit a ball to the wall in deep center field that was headed over the fence before the HBU center fielder reached up to rob the attempt at the wall and sustain the tie. Finally, after pitching ten innings of one-run ball, HBU finally got to Wilbur for a two-run home run, which provided the decisive score in the 11-inning bout. Wilbur was excellent across 11 innings of work, hurling over 170 pitches and striking out ten batters while allowing just five hits.
GAME TWO | 5-4 Victory
Offense was less of a problem for both teams in the matinee, as SFA responded quickly to an RBI groundout from HBU which gave them an early 1-0 lead. RBI singles from Mackenzie Bennett and Alex Hedspeth in the bottom of the first and second inning, respectively, gave SFA the early 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, HBU again took the lead on another RBI groundout and an RBI single off Reagan Chism to take a 4-2 lead. Taking advantage of some HBU miscues and timely hitting in the bottom of the frame, SFA tied the game up at four apiece on a two-run single by Camryn Middlebrook, which scored Gaby Garcia and Shaylon Govan.
One inning later. the 'Jacks got a leadoff single by Hedspeth, then a two-out single from Amanda Carden to keep the inning alive. HBU starter Lyndie Swanson (9-2) then hit Bryana Novegil and walked Govan with the bases loaded, scoring pinch runner Simone Medeiros to put SFA ahead 5-4. Wilbur then came on in relief of Chism in the top of the seventh, working around a pair of hits to shut the door on the Huskies and earn her third save of the season.
