Walk-off Base Hit From Moore Secures First Game, 'Jacks Split Doubleheader with 'Kats

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (15-24, 12-15 SLC) kicked off the series against the Sam Houston Bearkats (20-18, 16-11 SLC) with a statement 6-3 victory on Friday, able to roll into Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader to garner its second victory of the conference clash glimmered by a walk-off RBI single from Sean Moore in the tenth inning. The Bearkats were able to control the pace from the start in Game 2, defeating SFA to even out the day, 9-3.
The 'Jacks are in a position to take the series with a win tomorrow over the 'Kats, otherwise both squads will split for two games apiece.
GAME 1 | SFA, 5-4 (9 inn.)
- Jake Zarrello homered to right center in B-2 to give the 'Jacks a 1-0 lead.
- SFA held SHSU to only one hit until the fifth inning, which was the only stanza where both teams scored at least one run.
- Kade Clemens slammed home a 2 RBI home run to left field to score Zarrello (BB) to tack on two more runs for the 'Jacks to wrap up the fourth inning.
- SHSU converted on three hits for its first two runs on the day, with RBI's coming from Trent Touchet (HR CF) and Clayton Chadwick (1B RF).
- Cameron Crawford continued his offensive spark from yesterday singling down the left field line to begin the fifth, followed by Kyle Cullen (HBP) and Skylar Black (1B MI RBI) to clear Crawford for the fourth run of the game to boost the SFA lead to 4-2.
- The Bearkats knotted the contest up at 4-4 in T-7 from two base hit RBI's, leaving the 'Jacks hitless in B-7
- It wasn't until extra innings when the next offensive break came to fruition for the 'Jacks, set up by Moore's critical base hit to bring home Cullen who reached base on a fielder's choice bunt to clinch the game.
GAME 2 | SHSU, 9-3 (7 inn.)
- SHSU's Anthony Mackenzie (1B LS) and Trent Touchet (1B RC, RBI) strung together the first stanza for the 'Kats in the first.
- Jackson Loftin (1B LC, RBI) and Wes Folse (E5 RBI) put the ball in play for the 'Kats in the first inning as well, leading 3-0 after T-1.
- A pair of ground outs from Cullen and Black allowed Crawford (BB) to touch home plate for the first run of the game for SFA.
- Two more hits for two more runs sustained SHSU's 5-1 lead to end the top of the third, matched by an RBI single up the middle from Black to end the third.
- Colton Cowser (1B MI), Trent Touchet (2B LF, RBI) pushed Brandon Pruitt (BB) through for the sixth run of the game in T-4. Loftin quickly adds to it with a base-hit RBI through the left side.
- Jordan Monacy led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to right field (SHSU, 7-3).
- The eighth and ninth runs consisted of a wild pitch and another solo home run for the 'Kats to secure the 9-3 victory.
