CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The Lumberjack baseball team fell to the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders at Chapman Field Friday night, dropping the opening game of the Southland Conference series, 5-1. The 'Jacks transition into tomorrow's doubleheader with a 15-25 record overall, with a 12-16 SLC standing.
While the 'Jacks connected on one more hit than the Islanders, the timely RBI's were the difference makers in the tonight's ballgame. A sacrifice fly to left field from the Islanders' Itchy Burts gave Cole Fluta (BB) the green light in the bottom of the third after two scoreless innings from both squads, enhanced by Josh Caraway's double down the left field line to drive in Luke Marbach (BB) for a 2-0 lead at the end of three. TAMUCC stole two bases during the third, additionally capitalizing on two wild pitches.
Sean Moore collected his 21st RBI of the season in the fourth with a base hit to right center charging in Jordan Monacy (1B RF) for one run to close in on TAMUCC's quick 2-0 lead, but the 'Jacks were only able to bring around one tally in the fourth. Two SFA baserunners were left stranded despite a pair of hits.
The fourth inning was impactful for the Islanders, featured by home two back-to-back home runs to extend the lead to 4-1 after the complete inning. The 'Jacks found one base hit and one stolen base from Chaney Dodge in the fifth, but the combination of a single plus two stolen base successes from Burts put the Islanders in the position for a 5-1 advantage.
SFA's Adrian Minjares and Moore contributed one double apiece in the seventh and ninth, but not enough to put another on the board.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow at noon for another matchup with the Islanders.
