NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball program is elated to announce prior Assistant Coach Len Bishop as the new Associate Head Coach under Mark Kellogg, the team announced this week.
"Coach Bishop is very deserving of this new Associate Head Coaching role within our program," said Head Coach Mark Kellogg. "Coach and I have grown together over the past six years and I have tremendous trust and respect in him. Coach Bishop will continue to lead our defense and develop our post players as he has in the past. I look forward to moving this program forward with Coach Bishop by my side."
Bishop has proven to make a tremendous impact on the defensive strategy for the Ladyjacks, especially in this year's record-breaking season. The 'Jacks led all of NCAA Division I in Total Steals (356) and Turnovers Forced (641), as well as a Top 5 team Scoring Defense (No. 2, 51.0) and Field Goal Percentage Defense (No. 4, 33.7).
On top of the emphasizing defensive philosophies, Bishop helped guide the Ladyjacks to a No. 30 NET Ranking, reaching No. 17 during the midst of the regular season. SFA received votes in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 1998, and finished the regular season with a 24-3 overall record with 14-0 slate in Southland Conference play.
During this historic season, the Ladyjacks received two players on the 2021 Southland Conference All-Defensive Team in Aiyana Johnson and Stephanie Visscher, where Johnson led the Southland Conference in blocked shots (53 total, 2.0 per game) and Visscher ranking No. 7 (30 total, 1.1 per game). Visscher tied for No. 19 across NCAA Division I in Total Steals (66) this year.
Bishop's work with the SFA post players in the 2017-18 season flourished by developing a stellar senior campaign of Stevi Parker, who became the program's 32nd 1,000-point scorer and cracked the top ten career rebounds list at SFA on the way to Southland All-Conference First Team honors. In addition, forward Imani Johnson was recognized as the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year in her first season under Bishop's direction.
The Ladyjacks made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006 as a No. 12 seed with Coach Bishop on staff, winning its first Southland Conference Tournament Title since 2006.
