NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA softball team relied on the long ball on Saturday in a pair of victories over rival Northwestern State to continue its season-long winning streak. SFA got a pair of solo shots to provide run support for Kassidy Wilbur (21-3) in a 2-0 victory in the opener, while Shaylon Govan's clutch grand slam broke a 5-5 tie in the nightcap to secure SFA's second win of the day.
GAME ONE - 2-0 Victory
A classic pitchers duel was the theme of the opening contest, as NSU's Jensen Howell and Kassidy Wilbur squared off in the circle. Howell was just as sharp as Wilbur throughout the game, but missed her spot on two pitches, which the 'Jacks sent over the wall for the game's only two runs.
Lexi Benson opened the game's scoring in the third inning, as Lexi Benson took a Howell offering over the fence in left field. In the fourth frame, Alex Hedspeth did the same thing, also a solo shot, to give SFA an insurance run.
Wilbur was strong in pitching the complete game shutout, scattering three hits and three walks over seven innings while fanning four Lady Demons.
GAME TWO - 9-5 Victory
In game two, the Lady Demons took the third inning lead on an RBI single off Reagan Chism which gave them a 1-0 lead, but the 'Jacks quickly retook the lead thanks to RBI doubles off the bat of Camryn Middlebrook and Shaylon Govan to score Amanda Carden and Middlebrook.
The Ladyjacks ran into trouble in the fifth frame, as NSU loaded the bases off Chism and Raigan Mock, who had come on in relief, before catcher Alexis Perry smacked a grand slam over the left field fence to plate four and take a 5-2 lead.
Responding again to conceding the lead, the 'Jacks would close the gap thanks to some timely hitting of their own. Benson led off the inning with her second home run of the day to make it 5-3. After Carden drew a walk and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a Middlebrook single, Gaby Garcia was able to drive her in with an RBI single up the middle to trim the lead to 5-4.
In the sixth inning, the Ladyjacks were able to load the bases for Camryn Middlebrook, who poked a ball through the left side to tie the game up at 5-5. The next batter
up, Shaylon Govan, clobbered a grand slam over the wall in left center to plate four more runs and give SFA a late 9-5 lead. The home run was Govan's 13th of the season, tying her with Margarita Corona for the most in a single season by a Ladyjack.
Wilbur (22-3) earned the win for SFA in a relief stint, pitching 2.1 inningss and striking out four while allowing one run on one hit.
