BEAUMONT, Texas -- A late equalizer conceded to the eighth-seeded Islanders did little but stall the SFA soccer team on their pursuit of a Southland Conference Tournament title match berth, as the Lumberjacks were rock solid in the penalty kick shootout to advance by a 4-2 tally into the semifinal round. The PK shootout came after two overtime periods failed to yield a golden goal following a regulation period that was largely dominated by the top-seeded 'Jacks.
SFA opened the game's scoring in the eighth minute of play, as Katelyn Termini was tripped up by an Islander defender as she moved laterally in the goal box to create a scoring chance. Termini stepped up to the spot and beat Islander goalkeeper Kyleigh Hall with the resulting penalty kick, giving SFA the 1-0 lead. That margin would carry SFA into the halftime intermission as the 'Jacks outshot TAMUCC 9-6.
SFA continued to knock at the door in the second half, as Termini and other Lumberjack attackers found themselves in good scoring chances but pushed their shots just wide of frame or had them saved by Hall. SFA's best chance of doubling the lead came in the 65th minute, as Termini fired off a rocket of a shot that beat Hall but careened off the cross bar. A resulting second attempt by Termini off a feed from Camryn Romero was also well struck, but Hall was there for the save.
Unfortunately for SFA a breakdown on the defensive end in the game's waning moments allowed the Islanders to tied the game on a well placed ball in the 88th minute, sending the game into extra time.
After those two 10-minute periods failed to produce a winner, the teams entered the penalty shootout. After Termini's attempt to open the shootout missed, SFA goalkeeper Madeline Talbot blocked the Islander's first attempt to keep it tied at 0-0. Caylon McMillan made good on her attempt and was matched by the Islanders' second attempt, as was Mattie Musser behind her. Lauren Prentice scored on SFA's fourth kick, and Talbot knocked aside Addison Urbanus' attempt to put SFA up 3-2 in the shootout. Sophomore Colleen Feagins then stepped up as the decisive kicker and scored to win the shootout for SFA and advanced them onto the semifinal round.
Talbot was recognized as the Player of the Game for SFA after turning aside eight shots in regulation and two more in the penalty shootout.
