NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA soccer team scored two goals in the opening two minutes of play and held Southland leader Lamar without an equalizing tally the rest of the game on the way to earning a huge victory at home on Thursday, 2-1. The 'Jacks secured a crucial three points in the league table and also clinched a spot in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament with the victory, their sixth in conference play this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lumberjacks went for the jugular from the opening kick, as they took possession down in Lamar's final third. Senior Destiny Davis crossed a beautiful ball across the goal mouth to Colleen Feagins, who beat LU keeper Nicole Panis with the close range score to put SFA ahead just 52 seconds into the contest. After a quick restart and just 26 seconds later, the 'Jacks struck again, as Teia Haynes took a pass from Katelyn Termini and fired a shot past Panis for her fourth goal of the season.
With a quick 2-0 lead, SFA continued to press Lamar through the opening 20 minutes of play, and had several other great goal-scoring chances that they could not quite convert. Flipping the script in the second half of the first stanza, the Cardinals finally penetrated deep into the SFA half and pulled a goal back in the 25th minute to trim the lead to 2-1.
Neither team would score in the second half, and SFA was able to dominayte possession in the waning moments of the half to fend off any comeback chance from the redbirds.
The 'Jacks outshot Lamar heavily to the tune of a 21-7 shot advantage (6-3 SOG), and racked up 10 corner kicks to their opponent's four. Sophie Smith led the 'Jacks with four shots in the contest, while Davis, Termini and Mattie Musser each tallied three attempts. Madeline Talbot earned the win in goal by making two saves across the 90 minutes of action.
