CONWAY, AR -- The Ladyjack softball team earned a pair of victories on the opening day of the Adam Brown Memorial Classic in Conway on Friday, beating UAPB by a 10-0 count in five innings in the opener before edging Western Michigan 2-1 in the matinee. SFA improves to 3-7 with the victory, and has now notched wins in three of their past four games.
GAME 1 | vs. UNIV. OF ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF
SFA wasted little time getting on the board against Pine Bluff, as a leadoff single by Bryana Novegil and a pair of back-to-back walks by Camryn Middlebrook and Shaylon Govan set the table for some Ladyjack runs. A sacrifice fly by Gaby Garcia was enough to bring home Novegil, and Middlebrook stole home on a double steal in tandem with Govan, making it 2-0 SFA.
After Kassidy Wilbur notched her third and fourth strikeouts of the game in the top of the second, the 'Jacks went back to work in the bottom of the frame, as a Novegil single up the middle scored Alex Dubose (HBP) and Lexi Benson (single) to make it 4-0. After Novegil stole second a short while later, Middlebrook brought her home with an RBI double to left field, and was summarily doubled in by Govan moments later. Govan herself then came around to score off of an RBI single by Savanna Parker after advancing on a Garcia single.
With a 7-0 lead, Wilbur set the Lions down in order in the third while racking up two more punchouts, setting the 'Jacks up two go back to work in the bottom of the inning. After SFA loaded the bases off of a leadoff single, a walk and a hit batsman, a wild pitch allowed Amanda Carden to score to make it 8-0. Govan then hit a single and advanced to second on the throw while Middlebrook and Novegil came aorund to score to push the lead to 10-0.
After Govan came into the circle in relief and didn't allow the Lady Lions to score in the fourth or fifth frame, the game was called due to the run rule. Novegil paced the 'Jacks with three runs, two hits, two RBI and a walk on the day, while Govan had two hits and drove in three runs. Middlebrook scored three times, had a hit and drove in a run. Wilbur was lights out in the circle to earn the win, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six batters. Govan struck out one in two innings of relief.
GAME 2 | vs. WESTERN MICHIGAN
In game two of the day, SFA's first run of the day came off of an error by the left fielder, as a Gaby Garcia fly ball was misplayed and Novegil, who had walked, came around to score on the play. After WMU tied the game up in the sixth inning off of Wilbur, the 'Jacks looked to take the lead back in the top of the seventh. Mackenzie Bennet hit a pinch-hit double down the left field line and Marisa Arriaga, who was put in as a pinch runner, advanced to third on a groundout moments later. Middlebrook then singled home Arriaga for the go-ahead run.
Looking for the complete game, Wilbur struck out the first batter and then induced a fly out. After a single to the shortstop, Wilbur caught the last batter looking for her eight strikeout of the day to close it out.
