CONWAY, AR -- The Ladyjack softball team earned two more victories at the Adam Brown Shamrock Memorial Classic on Saturday evening, best Mississippi Valley State 6-0 in the opener before edging Western Michigan by an 8-7 tally in the nightcap. SFA improves to 5-7 on the season with the victory, the team's fourth straight win.
GAME 1 | vs. MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE
After a scoreless first inning by both teams, the Ladyjacks would get on the board in the second inning off of a MVSU miscue, as Alex Dubose came around to score as Kayla Wallace reached on an error by the third baseman. In the third inning, Gaby Garcia singled up the middle to score Taylor Trosclair, who was pinch running for Shaylon Govan after a double by the sophomore. Later in the inning, Bailey Richards doubled to center field and drove in Simone Medeiros and Garcia to make the lead 4-0.
Another error in the fifth inning allowed Madison Nguyen to come home and make the lead 5-0, and an error by the center fielder in the seventh inning allowed Camryn Middlebrook to come home for the game's final run.
In the circle for SFA, Kassidy Wilbur continued her dominant stretch, as she hurled a complete game shutout by allowing just one hit and walking one batter. She struck out 11 batters and threw just 91 pitches.
GAME 2 | vs. WESTERN MICHIGAN
In game two of the day, SFA's first run of the day came off the bat of Govan, who doubled to right center to score Middlebrook, who had doubled right before her. That run would tie the game at 1-1, where it would stay until the third inning, where Western Michigan scored four runs in the frame, all unearned, to take a 5-1 lead. The Broncos added a sixth run to their score one inning later on an RBI single off Raigan Mock, who pitched two innings in relief of Govan, who had started.
Needing a big inning to rally, the Ladyjacks got just that in the fifth inning, as they loaded the bases with singles from Lexi Dubose, Amanda Carden and Bryana Novegil. Middlebrook then drove in Dubose with a single, followed shortly thereafter by an RBI single from Govan to score Carden. A throwing error by the Bronco pitcher allowed Novegil to come across one batter later, and Middlebrook came across to score on a fielder's choice by Bailey Richards. Finally, a Mackenzie Bennett single drove in Gaby Garcia to tie the game at 6-6. Back up to bat in the same inning, Dubose then lined a single into center field to plate two more runs and give SFA an 8-6 lead.
Entering the game with a two-run lead in relief of Mock, Kassidy Wilbur promptly struck out the side in order, and would close it out in the seventh inning despite an RBI triple by WMU, striking out the final batter to end the ballgame. Wilbur pitched two innings to get the save, striking out six, while Mock picked up the win with two innings of relief work.
SFA tallied 12 hits in the nightcap, led by Middlebrook's three base knocks. Carden had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, as did Govan with her two hits.
