Beaumont, TEXAS -- The Lumberjacks traveled to Lamar for a three-game non-conference series starting Friday night, where SFA fell to the Cardinals in Game 1, 4-1. SFA shifts to 2-4 this season, but will be right back at it on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m for a chance to grab a series victory or clinch.
How It Happened
The Cardinals took advantage of a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first from Avery George, mixed in with a groundout to second base credited to Chase Kemp which drove in George for the Cardinal's first run of the game to lead 1-0 to round out the first inning.
The Lumberjack offense was able to respond in the fifth, as Skylar Black singled to centerfield for the 'Jacks, and advanced to second base from a passed ball during Kyle Cullen's at-bat, resulting in a sacrifice bunt to assist the SFA runner already on base. A base hit to center field from Bryan Burgos brought in Black, and the Lumberjacks tied the ballgame up 1-1 after SFA's half of the inning.
In the top of the 5th, Lamar scored two runs to gain a 3-1 advantage energized by an Anthony Quirion's RBI single, allowing Snell to cruise home following his base hit earlier in the inning. Logan Lejeune's HBP scored Weyler (walk) for the third run of the game due to bases loaded, and the Cardinals threw up the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth for a 4-1 triumph over the Lumberjacks.
