NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA Softball team used timely hitting and stellar defense to win a tight pitcher's duel against in-state foe UT-Arlington at SFA Softball Field on Wednesday night, 2-0. The win in the non-conference tilt was SFA's fourth in a row and 13th win in the past 14 games for the 'Jacks, who move to 14-8 on the season with the result.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SFA and UTA were locked in a defensive struggle through the opening frames of play, as neither side registered a hit until the top of the third inning, and neither broke open the game's scoring till the fourth. UTA would threaten in the third off of SFA starter Reagan Chism (2-0), as they got the leadoff runner to third with two outs before catching the Maverick pinch runner in a rundown and getting a groundout one pitch later to end the threat.
The Mavs would move runners to second and third on a pair of singles in the fourth inning, but Chism induced another groundout to get out of the jam and keep the game scoreless. Finally in the fourth inning would SFA register its first hit of the game, a double off the bat of Shaylon Govan with one out that put the offense in position. After a single by Gaby Garcia and and a HBP by Alex Hedspeth, Mackenzie Bennett singled to center field to score Madison Nguyen, who was pinch running for Govan, and Garcia, who was initially ruled out at the plate off the relay from center but the run was counted after it was ruled that Hedspeth had been interfered with on the basepaths around second base.
With a two-run lead in play, SFA found itself in trouble in the next half inning, as Chism yielded a pair of one-out singles to the Mavs, prompting coach Nicole Dickson to make a call to the bullpen and Kassidy Wilbur. Wilbur came on and garnered one more out, then walked the next batter to load the bases for UTA. Fortunately, a flyout to center field got the 'Jacks out of the jam, and Wilbur kept the Mavs at bay in the sixth and seventh frames to close out the game for SFA.
Govan registered two of SFA's five hits on the day, while Bennett came through with SFA's biggest hit on a day where the offense never quite got going. Chism pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless ball, scattering six hits across the four innings of work while inducing seven groundball outs. Wilbur earned her second save of the season by pitching 2.2 innings of relief, yielding one walk and one hit while striking out three.
