NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA softball team offense came through in spades on Friday against Nicholls in a home doubleheader, winning the games by 6-0 and 12-2 margins. SFA shut out the Colonels in the first match behind a dominant start in the circle by Kassidy Wilbur and overpowered the Colonels in five innings of work to cut short the matinee due to a mercy rule. SFA improves to 12-8 overall on the season and 5-0 in league play, and will finish the series with the Colonels tomorrow.
GAME ONE
The Ladyjacks got an early boost from Camryn Middlebrook in the first inning, as she hit a solo shot over the left field wall to give SFA the early 1-0 lead. The Ladyjacks tacked on two more runs in the third inning, as Bailey Richards singled and Bryana Novegil walked, and were summarily driven in by a single from Gaby Garcia.
In the fourth inning, a leadoff walk by Kayla Wallace paid dividends for SFA, as Middlebrook homered to right center for her second shot of the game to push the lead to 5-0. Shaylon Govan then walked, and came around to score on a Garcia double to get the lead to 6-0.
Kassidy Wilbur was lights out in the circle, throwing four no-hit innings and allowing just three hits in total. She threw all seven innings in the contest and struck out ten batters on the way to improving to 10-3 on the season.
GAME TWO
In game two of the doubleheader, the Ladyjacks jumped all over the Colonels in the first inning, torching starter Brittany Turner for five runs and taking a 6-0 lead by the time the smoke cleared. Novegil led off the fray with a walk, and advanced to third on a Middlebrook single. Novegil was summarily driven in by a single from Govan, who then teamed up with Middlebrook for a double steal. Garcia then walked to load the bases, and Middlebrook scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Hedspeth. After Mackenzie Bennett walked and the Colonels went to the bullpen, Marisa Arriaga drove in Govan with a single and one batter later Garcia scored on a Kayla Wallace sacrifice fly. Finally, senior catcher doubled to plate Bennett and Arriaga and push the lead to 6-0.
After Nicholls scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third, the Ladyjacks loaded the bases in the third with a walk, single and a HBP, and got a run off an RBI single by Bryana Novegil. Govan then singled to bring in Wallace and Arriaga to push the lead to 9-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hedspeth was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning but came around to score on a two-run home run by Bennett. Later, an RBI walk by Govan allowed Lexi Benson to scoreand extended the lead to 12-1. Nicholls would tack on a run in the fifth but after failing to get margin to single-digits, the game ended after five innings due to the run rule.
Reagan Chism earned the win in the circle, hurling four innings of one-run ball on two hits. She struck out three and walked two. Raigan Mock pitched an inning of relief for SFA.
