Ladyjacks Surge Back to Complete Sweep of Nicholls, 9-4

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA softball team fended off a pesky Nicholls squad thanks to a six-run sixth inning to complete the series sweep over the Colonels and win their third game in a row. The Ladyjacks trailed 4-3 entering the frame but the offense came to life in the inning to jump ahead by a 9-4 score, and did not concede the lead for the rest of the game. With the victory, SFA improves to 13-8 on the season and moves to 6-0 in Southland Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Nicholls came out firing on offense in the contest after being held to just two runs in the doubleheader on Friday, as they hung three runs on starter Kassidy Wilbur in the opening frame. SFA would answer in the bottom of the frame, as Bryana Novegil and Shaylon Govan got on base via base hits, and were driven in by a double from Gaby Garcia. A Colonel error then allowed Alexa Hedspeth to reach and Govan to come home to tie the game up at three apiece.

The Ladyjacks loaded the bases in the second inning with two outs, but the Colonels got out of the jam to keep the game tied up, After scoreless innings in the third and fourth by both teams, Nicholls scored on an RBI single to take a 4-3 lead in the contest.

Starting off the bottom of the sixth inning and needing a run to tie the game, SFA got things started with a pinch-hit double by Savanna Parker, who later came around to score on an RBI groundout by Novegil. With two outs in the inning, Camryn Middlebrook got on base via an error, allowing SFA to continue the inning. Govan then walked, and Garcia came through with an RBI single to plate Middlebrook. After Alex Hedspeth was hit by a pitch, Mackenzie Bennett delivered a two-run double to center field to score two more runs, and came around to score with Hedspeth on a two-run single by Marisa Arriaga to complete the scoring flurry.

Bennett tallied two hits and drove in three RBI's, while Garcia added a pair of hits and pair of RBI's. Kassidy Wilbur (11-3) pitched seven full innings in the contest in earning the win, allowing four runs on six hits while fanning five batters.
