WACO, Texas -- The SFA softball team didn't back down in a midweek matchup with the Baylor Bears in Waco on Tuesday night, taking a 2-2 tie into the game's sixth inning before a late surge pulled the Bears ahead by a 3-2 final score. Twice the Bears took the lead and twice the Ladyjacks battled back to tie the contest before the decisive sixth inning of play. The hard fought loss snaps SFA's nine-game winning streak and moves the 'Jacks to 10-8 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In what served as a bullpen game for both squads, the Ladyjack starter was sophomore Reagan Chism. The Bears struck first with a run off Chism in the bottom of the first inning, but would tie the game up in the top of the second. After Alex Hedspeth and Mackenzie Bennett were hit by pitches to open the inning, a double play moved Hedspeth to third with two outs. Amanda Carden then came up with the timely RBI single up the middle to plate Hedspeth and tie the game.
Baylor took the lead once more in the third, scoring on a stolen base followed by a wild pitch. In the top of the fourth frame, Alex Hedspeth reached on an error by the Baylor pitcher, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. A groundout by Bennett then allowed Hedspeth to come home once more for another tying run.
In the top of the sixth, SFA had its best chance at scoring a decisive run, as Shaylon Govan drew a leadoff walk. After pinch runner Taylor Trosclair advanced to second on a groundout, Hedspeth singled to third base and Bennett walked, loading the bases. The 'Jacks weren't able to push a run across in the next two batters, however, as Baylor got a force out at the plate to tag Trosclair and a groundout for the final out to end the threat.
Coming on in relief of Chism was Raigan Mock, who pitched three efficient innings before Baylor finally found its footing. A one-out single was followed by a double to put two runners into scoring position and force an SFA pitching change. Kassidy Wilbur came on in relief but gave up a single to right field that scored the runner from third, while a Gaby Garcia assist from RF cut down the second runner at the plate. After Wilbur struck out the final batter of the inning, the 'Jacks came up with three outs in the top of the seventh to try and steal the victory.
A two-out single by Camryn Middlebrook gave SFA some life after a flyout and groundout to open the frame, but Govan grounded out to end the contest.
