Ladyjacks Dig First Southland Conference Matchup in 5 Sets at Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
The SFA Ladyjacks took down the Corpus Christi Islanders 3-2 (25-19, 14-25, 32-34, 25-18, 15-9) in five sets on the road to begin Southland Conference play. Tonight's win moves the Ladyjacks to 13-4, 1-0 in SLC play.
SFA was led offensively by Leah Powell who finished with 14 kills on the outing. Taya Mitchell added 11 kills while hitting .556 to boost the Ladyjacks past the Islanders, with Madylenn Miller registering 19 digs.
SET 1 | The Ladyjacks took the first set 25-19 to kick off its first Southland Conference set. SFA was able to secure a 6-5 lead due to an Islander's ballhandling error, and the Ladyjacks didn't look back from there. SFA held at least a three-point lead in the second half of the set, and finished with a hitting percentage of .273. The Ladyjacks had five blocks to the Islanders' zero in this set.
SET 2 | The Islanders took control in the next set jumping out to a 6-0 lead and finished the set with 16 of its 25 points ending in kills. The Ladyjacks had a total hitting percentage of .077 in Set 2, and struggled to generate offense, as they fell 25-14.
SET 3 | This was by far the most entertaining set of the match as the Islanders won its second set against the Ladyjacks, 34-32. SFA was in game-point territory (24-22) off of an Islanders' ballhandling error, but the combination of an Islander kill and ace knotted the set at 24-24, which forced a Ladyjack timeout. SFA had a chance to potentially tie it 33-33 to remain alive, but an attack error gave the Islanders the 34-32 win.
SET 4 | After a hard-fought previous set, SFA responded by scoring the first three points of the game and jumped out to an 8-3 lead before a Corpus Christi timeout. SFA accumulated a .367 hitting percentage in this set, and the Ladyjacks were able to hold double-digit leads throughout. Head Coach Debbie Humphreys squad never trailed, taking the set 25-18.
SET 5 | The Ladyjacks garnered a 4-2 lead from a Taya Mitchell kill to kick off Set 5, and the Islanders called a timeout to prevent an SFA run. The Ladyjacks put together a set-high .375 hitting percentage to clinch its first Southland Conference victory of the season. In Set 4 and Set 5, the Ladyjacks had a combined seven aces.
