CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The SFA men's basketball team got back to basics in Wednesday's 84-75 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, bullying the Islanders down low on its way to a second straight league victory and improving to 7-1 in Southland Conference play. The Lumberjacks dispatched the Islanders behind a strong opening half, and received a game-high 29 points from guard Cameron Johnson to help seal the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After wresting control of the lead away from the hosts with 14:52 left to go in the opening half of play, the Lumberjacks worked to expand the lead. After several minutes of back and forth play between the teams, the 'Jacks used an 11-2 run punctuated by five points from Johnson and buckets from Charlie Daniels, Gavin Kensmil and Nana Antwi-Boasiako to push the lead into double-digits (47-34). An 8-0 run by the Islanders would trim the lead to 47-42 at the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the Lumberjacks once again extended the lead into double-digits and seemed destined for a double-digit victory, only to see the hosts mount a late comeback attempt. Some offensive miscues by the 'Jacks combined with a flurry of late baskets down the stretch saw the Islanders pull within six points (81-75) with 37 second left to play in the half, but free throws from Johnson and Calvin Solomon combined with missed shots Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would seal the result for SFA.
LEADERS
Cameron Johnson led all scorers with 29 points and just barely missed out on his second 30-point game this season. Gavin Kensmil hauled down nine rebounds to lead SFA, while Solomon and Antwi-Boasiako each grabbed eight boards. Nigel Hawkinshad two steals for the 'Jacks.
