NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA Soccer team continued its strong stretch of play through the early goings of the league schedule on Sunday, as a penalty goal by Katelyn Termini in the game's 74th minute lifted SFA to a 1-0 victory and improved their league record to 3-0 on the season. The 'Jacks didn't manage more shots than UIW in the contest, but earned a decisive penalty late in the contest that gave Termini a chance at the go-ahead goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SFA got a stellar chance at the game's first goal early on, as Termini was driving approaching goal with the ball and UIW's keeper charged out to meet her. Termini deflty poked the ball past the netminder and was about to have a wide open look at goal but for the keeper diving back towards the ball, bringing Termini down in the process for a clear foul. Instead of a PK and a card for the goalkeeper, however, play was allowed to continue and the 'Jacks were left with nothing to show for it.
After the two sides battled to a scoreless halftime intermission, the second half featured a rejuvenated Lumberjack attack. A pivotal substitution in the game's 73rd minute brought Teia Haynes onto the field for the 'Jacks, and not two minutes later the junior was brought down in the box by a UIW defender, earning a penalty shot for the 'Jacks. Termini stepped to the spot and slotted the ball past the diving goalkeeper for the game's first--and only--goal. From there, the Cardinals were forced to mount an increasingly desperate comeback attempt, registeirng seven more shots in the competition. SFA goalkeeper Madeline Talbot was intent on keeping them at bay, however, making two pivotal saves in the waning minutes of play.
Talbot registered her third consecutive clean sheet in the victory, earning every inch of the shutout by making eight saves on the day.
