DENTON, Texas -- The Ladyjack softball team opened up play at the North Texas Invitational on Friday with a resounding 6-0 victory over future WAC foe Tarelton State before falling to the host Mean Green by a 9-1 score in the matinee. The Ladyjacks earned their first win of the 2021 season in shutout fashion and will look to build on that momentum when play resumes tomorrow in Denton.
GAME 1 | vs. TARLETON STATE
SFA opened the scoring in the first inning, as Alex Hedspeth and Marisa Arriaga got on base via a HBP and a walk, and Hedspeth was driven in by an RBI single off the bat of Gaby Garcia. The Ladyjacks added to the lead in the third inning, as Shaylon Govan walked, Garcia doubled, and Govan came in to score on a groundout by Mackenzie Bennett. Garcia later came around to score on a single up the middle by Amanda Carden, growing the lead to 3-0.
Doubling the 'Jacks lead in the sixth inning, Shaylon Govan smacked her first home run of the season--a three-run shot--over the left field fence to score Hedspeth, who had doubled, and Carden, who had walked. Earning the victory nside the circle was Kassidy Wilbur, who pitched seven shutout innings while scattering six hits and a walk over the complete game shutout. She struck out 10 Tarelton State batters as well.
GAME 2 | vs. NORTH TEXAS
In the second game of the day, Gaby Garcia continued her hot day at the plate with a leadoff home run over the left field wall, giving SFA an early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, that was the only thing doing for SFA on the day, as the Mean Green chased Shaylon Govan to the tune of eight runs in the bottom of the frame and one more in the second inning to push the lead to 9-1. The game was called after four innings.
Garcia, Hedspeth, Bennett, Arriaga and Lexi Benson each tallied a hit for the Ladyjacks in the contest.
