NACOGDOCHES, Texas --
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (19-9) opened up the First Round of the NIVC with a victory against the reigning SWAC regular season champions in Jackson State, 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12) in Shelton Gym on Friday night. The Ladyjacks will face a familiar opponent tomorrow night in the University of Arkansas for Round Two, where the 'Jacks battled in a four-set match with the Razorbacks in mid-September falling 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 23-25).
In tonight's opening round, two Ladyjacks registered double-digit kills in Payton Cerny (14) and Leah Powell (12), as Powell surpassed kill No. 500 in her career. Taya Mitchell complemented the offense with seven slams on the evening.
Kelsey Harrington led the way on the defensive end with four blocks to her name, balanced by three from Cerny and two from Mitchell.
The Ladyjacks came out strong in the first stanza rattling off seven straight points to take an early 9-2 lead generated by the combination of one kill from each Mitchell and Cerny in addition to an Ariana Pagan service ace, able to capitalize on JSU attack errors to extend the early lead. Another mid-set run for the 'Jacks at the 16-7 mark was pivotal to continue the offensive rhythm, thanks to Mitchell squaring away another kill plus a service ace to boost the squad.
Powell opened up Set 2 with three straight kills to pick up where the 'Jacks left off, but the Tigers matched the pace of the set, and took a four-point lead (12-8) before Kennedy Wright cut into the JSU run by converting on two consecutive kills to make it a one point set, 15-14. It all came down to the wire in this one at the 20-point mark, as the Tigers evened up the match at 1-1.
The 'Jacks finished strong in Set 3, notching the final five points of the set with kills from Hailey Hunt, Kelsey Harrington, Mitchell and Ashley Procious. SFA capitalized on four 3+ point runs to keep the energy consistent throughout, and continued to do the same in Set 4, able to gain a double-digit advantage in this set.
Round Two coverage continues between the Ladyjacks and the Razorbacks tomorrow night on ESPN+ at 7:00 p.m.
