NACOGDOCHES, Texas --
The Ladyjack volleyball team battled in a second round NIVC matchup with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday night in Shelton, falling 3-0 (18-25, 17-25, 18-25) to wrap up the 2021 campaign. SFA completed its first season in the Western Athletic Conference with a second place finish in the Southwest Division, and a winning season of 19-10.
SFA opened up the first set with a 4-1 lead topped off with a Bryli Contreras ace, soon for Arkansas to knot up the set at 8-8 to give the set its first tie since trading the first few points early on. The Razorbacks managed to rattle off four straight points to take a 14-11 advantage mid-set, where they were the first team to 20 and never looked back, as five of the last seven points in the set came from a combination of service aces and kills to grab the win, 25-18.
The Razorbacks jumped out to a 12-3 advantage in the second, but Hailey Hunt's kill brought the set back to 12-6 as the 'Jacks looked for a quick spark to cut into the early deficit. A Kelsey Harrington slam excited the crowd at the 20-16 point with the Razorbacks still holding onto the lead, but the lead soon lengthened from a pair of Arkansas kills and two SFA errors to give the second set to Arkansas as well.
Set 3 was a critical one for the home team as they played from behind from the start, able to get within four (15-11) from a Payton Cerny kill to give the chance for a late run. The Razorbacks responded with two three-point spurts from then on, holding onto an advantage by at least three points the rest of the way.
SFA was led offensively by Leah Powell with eight kills, followed by five from Cerny and three from Hunt. Taya Mitchell led the charge at the net converting on four blocks, with Ashley Procious adding two tonight.
