NACOGDOCHES, Texas --
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks traveled to Stephenville Thursday night for a bout with Tarleton State, falling to the Texans in five sets (25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 8-15). The Ladyjacks move to 16-7, 7-4 WAC.
Both squads battled in a highly competitive match, as it was knotted up eight times in each of the opening two sets, with seven in the third and 14 in the fourth. The conference foes exchanged 21 combined lead changes on the night.
Leah Powell led the Ladyjacks with 17 kills and 17 digs for a double-double, complemented by Valeria Rosado (16) and Taya Mitchell (13). Other statistical leaders include Ariana Pagan (19 digs) and Bryli Contreras (13 digs and three service aces).
SFA took the first set of the night after trailing 13-15 at the first media timeout, but quickly followed by a kill and an ace from Rosado to tie it up at 15-15. Kelsey Harrington and Powell followed with kills of their own to give the 'Jacks a two-point lead, enhanced by back-to-back aces from Bryli Contreras to extend the lead to five to highlight the set.
In set two, the Texans decided to call a timeout after trailing mid-set (13-16), but Tarleton's Elise Smith responded out of the break as she found the gap. The Ladyjack lead was in fact lifted to five (19-14) late in the stanza, only to be snapped by back-to-back aces from Ana Costas to force an SFA timeout of their own. The Texans grabbed the final four points of the match to tie the match up.
The Ladyjacks redeemed themselves by a feisty start in the third set as the stanza was tied at 10-10, followed by a kill and a block to give the Texans the lead back. The turning point of the set was when the 'Jacks capitalized off of two errors with three Rosado kills to boost the Ladyjacks to a victory. A down-to-the-wire fourth set was on the line for both teams to exercise a potential fifth set though, as TSU scored the final five points of the match to put themselves in position to win and continued the energy in the game-winning set.
The 'Jacks will be back in action on Saturday, November 6th at Abilene Christian.
