HOUSTON, Texas --
The Ladyjacks traveled to Houston for a doubleheader with the Cougars out of the American Conference, where UH took Game 1 against SFA, 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 13-25, 21-25). The Ladyjacks were handed its third loss of the season, but grabbed Set 2 in the match.
The Cougars had a .322 hitting percentage compared to SFA's .130, as UH dominated in overall kills (64-40) and digs (73-55), highlighted by five players supplying at least 10 kills. Both teams had 147 attacks on the outing.
Leah Powell led the way for the Ladyjacks with 11 kills and six digs, followed by Ielan Bradley contributing seven kills, with Kennedy Wright and Coco Gillett chipping in five kills apiece, respectively.
Set 1 | UH, 25-15
The Cougars opened up the first set 4-0 capitalizing off of Ladyjack attack errors, but SFA made its first appearance on the scoreboard from an Ielan Bradley kill (assist from Madelynn Miller). Houston distanced themselves 11-2, but SFA responded with three straight points, including an ace from Maddy Borque. SFA's closest margin was four when the score was 13-9 Cougars, but UH ran away with it 25-15, but UH's eight of its last 12 points ending in kills.
Set 2 | SFA, 25-19
The Ladyjacks scored the first three points of the game, and didn't trail a single point in this set. Houston called a timeout at the 14-9 mark, but the Ladyjacks came out of it with a point off of a Cougar attack error. The Cougars scored three straight points to tighten the Ladyjack lead to 15-12, and Coco Gillett answered with a kill (assist from Maddy Borque). A kill from Payton Cerny and ace from Maddy Borque tallied the final two points, as the Ladyjacks won 25-19.
Set 3 | UH, 25-13
The tables turned in the third set with the Cougars leading 3-0 to kick off the set, and the Ladyjacks struggled to generate offense in this frame. SFA called a timeout when UH jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but the Cougars were too much for the Ladyjacks, only able to get within six, 10-16. The UH lead extended to 21-11, where the Ladyjacks only scored three points off of Cougars' errors for their final points of the game.
Set 4 | UH, 25-21
With what was eventually going to be the final set of Game 1, both teams rallied back and forth, and SFA was ultimately striving to stay alive en route to a potential fifth set. SFA had a 15-8 led after a Kennedy Wright kill (assisted by Maddy Bourque), but the Cougars clawed back to tie the game at 18-18 off of a Ladyjack attack error. The game was back to 21-21 in the final points, but the home team ended the game with a kill to win, 25-21.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action at 6:00 p.m.
