Southland Conference Athlete of the Week Release
FRISCO, Texas -- Sophomores Jeremiah Curry and Branson Ellis have been named the Southland Conference Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, in a release from the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. Ellis brings home the award for the third time this season, while Curry earns his first weekly honor of the season.
Curry performed well for the 'Jacks over the weekend at the Tyson Invitational, taking first in the 200m dash with a personal-best 21.03 clip. He also registered a PR in the 400m race with a time of 47.46 in order to take fourth place. Curry now ranks second in the Southland in the 200m dash and third in the conference for the 400m dash.
Ellis set a Southland Conference record and took second in the pole vault event at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships over the weekend, clearing the bar with a 5.80m (19-0.25) effort. The mark came on his sixth jump of the afternoon and was the top mark among collegiate competitors. His mark is tied for third nationally, and bests fellow Lumberjack Adam Keul's record mark of 18-07.50, set in in the 2001 season.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
