Softball Falls in Maverick Classic Opener Despite Govan's Homer, 4-3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The SFA softball team dropped a tough 4-3 decision against University of Missouri-Kansas City on Friday, as the Roos walked off with the win in the bottom of the seventh after the 'Jacks tied the game up at 3-3 in the top of the frame.

Kassidy Wilbur (0-1) took the result in the circle despite a strong performance in which she went 6.2 innings and struck out ten UMKC batters. She surrendered four runs on seven hits, including an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.

At the plate, the 'Jacks were led by Shaylon Govan, who hit her second home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning tot ie the game uo at one apiece. She also added a double for a 2-4 performance at the dish. Madison Clements went 2-4 with a double, Savannah Parker drove in a run with an RBI single, and Alex Hedspeth and Brittany Crawford both collected a hit in the contest.

GAME SUMMARY

The 'Jacks felt behind 1-0 in the first inning off of a Roo homer, but would answer in the fourth inning on Govan's blast to center field.

SFA again answered a go-ahead score from UMKC in the fifth, as Parker's single briefly tied the game up at 2-2. After the Roos answered in the bottom of the frame to re-take a 3-2 lead, the 'Jacks faced a deficit heading into the top of the seventh inning. After Bailey Richards drew a two-out walk, Clements doubled her over to third, and Richards came home to score on an error by the Roo third baseman.

A one-out HBP put a man aboard for UMKC in the bottom of the seventh, although a fielder's choice retired the lead runner and leaving a runner at first. A double by the next batter would drive in the Roo runner, walking the game off for UMKC.

The 'Jacks are back in action tomorrow against the Golden Flashes of Kent State at 9:00 a.m, and will square off with the host UT-Arlington Mavericks at 4:30 p.m.
