SFA Begins Fall Play at Natchitoches Women’s Care/Lady Demon Invitational

NATCHITOCHES, La. - In its first action of the fall, the SFA women's tennis team headed to the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Tennis Complex on the campus of Northwestern State to take part in the Natchitoches Women's Care/Lady Demon Invitational.
In all, a trio of Ladyjacks - Armelle Cerdan, Gabi Guilarte, and Darinka Tiboldi - are headed to Saturday's consolation bracket championship matches after bouncing back following difficult setbacks in the early rounds.
After suffering a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 setback to Central Arkansas' Mei Ishimura in her opening match of the fall, Guilarte came on strong in the back draw and took down Tyler Junior College's Momoko Yoshimura 7-5, 6-2 to set up a showdown with Tiboldi in the consolation bracket finals.
Tiboldi's path to the consolation finals was similar to Guilarte's as she fell by a 7-5, 6-4 score to Northwestern State's Mariella Minetti in her first match of the afternoon. Down 1-0 against Louisiana's Dana Radavanaovic in her consolation bracket match, Tiboldi came all the way back to post a 2-6, 6-2, 11-9 victory in order to move on to the consolation finals.
Cerdan found herself on the wrong end of a 2-6, 7-6 (0), 10-8 loss at the hands of Southeastern Louisiana's Kim Bohlen in another singles bracket, but advanced to the consolation finals by default and will face Southeastern Louisiana's Teodora Mitrovic Saturday.
Elsewhere, Nida Kamal was the Ladyjacks' lone round one winner in singles action as the senior secured a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Alexia Tashbeva out of Tyler Junior College. Upon advancing to the championship bracket semifinals, however, Kamal dropped a 7-5, 0-6, 10-8 decision to Louisiana's Anna Katherine Harvey.
SFA newcomers Elena Bleicher, Ai Noa Fabre and Annie Walker all went 0-2 in singles action Friday.
Doubles play saw Kamal and Fabre team up to secure a 6-3 win over Southeastern Louisiana's pair of Bohlen and Bierma in the white bracket. Also winning in doubles action was the SFA tandem of Bleicher and Cerdan bested the Southeastern Louisiana duo of Mitrovic and Slepstova.
SFA's will return to action at 8:30 a.m. Saturday for day two of the invitational.
