SFA strikes for three homers in extra-inning affair
SANTA BARBARA, Calif - Junior outfielder Josh Campbell bashed a pair of two-run home runs and freshman outfielder Brandon Uhse delivered a clutch two-run single in a three-run 11th inning for the SFA baseball team but 19th-ranked UC Santa Barbara conjured up some extra-inning magic of its own and claimed a wild 14-12 victory thanks to Kyle Johnson's walk-off grand slam Saturday evening at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
In a game that featured six ties, an equal number of lead changes and 29 combined hits it was the Gauchos who got the big hit in the end to collect the series win.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | Manny Vasquez started things off by bashing a two-out, solo homer to give the 'Jacks their first lead of the game (1-0).
B1 | UC Santa Barbara struck for four of its 18 hits in the home half of the first. Two-out RBI singles from Armani Smith and Andrew Martinez pushed the Gauchos ahead 2-1.
T3 | Vasquez's good day at the plate continued in a top of the third that was elongated by a two of UC Santa Barbara's four errors. Nick Daley reached on a throwing error by Gauchos starting pitcher Jack Dashwood and Vasquez drove in his classmate with an RBI single to left-center. Sean Moore made SFA's lead 3-2 with a two-out RBI double before Jake Georgiades reached on another error that allowed Moore to come around and extend the visitors' lead to 4-2.
B3 | More two-out hitting allowed the Gauchos to pull even. Martinez upped his number of RBI to three on the day by driving a two-run single just inside fair ground down the left field line. That two-out, two-run hit made matters 4-4.
B4 | One of the nation's hottest hitters, Eric Yang handed UC Santa Barbara its second lead of the afternoon by blasting a 2-1 offering from SFA starter Jacob Stobart over the wall in left for a two-run homer that put SFA at a 6-4 disadvantage.
T5 | On the very first pitch Campbell saw from Alex Patterson, the junior tied things up by launching a no-doubt two-run shot to left field.
T6 | Looking to take the lead for the first time since the third inning, the 'Jacks made use of another Gaucho error in order to do so. Carson Clowers reached on a fielding miscue at shortstop and made it to third on a one-out single from Daley. Though UC Santa Barbara relief arm Kevin Chandler managed to catch Daley in a rundown between first and second, Clowers took the opportunity and came home while the Gauchos were getting Daley out to put SFA ahead 7-6.
B6 | Again the Gauchos tied things up, this time getting a productive out from Yang. The backstop grounded out to Clowers at short which allowed Mason Marquez to scamper home and make things 7-7.
T7 | Campbell went yard again in the seventh to break the 7-7 deadlock. Again jumping on the first pitch he saw, the junior's second two-run long ball of the afternoon put SFA up 9-7.
B7 | Jason Willow pulled the home team within a run with a sacrifice fly that plated Thomas Rowan.
B9 | A leadoff triple by Tommy Jew off of SFA reliever Jesus Gamez helped the Gauchos force extra innings. After Gamez registered a strikeout and a pop out, SFA's lone error of the game on a grounder by Martinez allowed Jew to come home and make things 9-9.
T11 | It appeared as though the 'Jacks had broken through for good in the top of the 11th. Jordan Monacy punched a single to right field and Clowers legged out a bunt single to put the 'Jacks in business early. A great sacrifice bunt by Kyle Cullen put a pair of runners in scoring position and set the table for Uhse who drove a two-run single through the right side of the Gauchos' infield. Casen White's bases-loaded walk extended the 'Jacks' lead to 12-9 and put them just three outs away from victory.
B11 | Gamez let up back-to-back single to UC Santa Barbara to start the bottom of the 11th and was pulled in favor of right-hander Tony Grabowske. The senior then issued a walk to load the bases and hit Willow with a 2-1 pitch to drive in the Gauchos' 10th run. With the bases juiced, the 'Jacks again went to the bullpen and summoned Austin Hearn to pitch. Johnson, however, ended the game with his grand slam on the second pitch he saw from Hearn.
AT THE DISH
• Campbell was one of three 'Jacks who enjoyed multi-hit afternoons. The junior's two hits resulted in a game-high four RBI for the Angleton, Texas, product. His multi-homer game represented the first time an SFA player his two homers in a game since Kyle Thornell belted a pair against Incarnate Word on April 22, 2016.
• Vasquez also notched a pair of hits to go along with two of the 'Jacks' four walks. The senior drove in a pair of runs and scored a game-high four runs of his own to keep SFA in it.
• Huber put forth his second-straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-6 while Uhse's two RBI came in his lone hit of the day.
• For the Gauchos, Smith delivered a game-high four hits and scored two of the team's 14 runs.
• Rowan turned in a three-hit performance and scored four of the team's 14 runs.
• Yang (2-for-6) and Martinez (2-for-4) each drove in a trio of runs while Tommy Jew added two hits of his own.
ON THE HILL
• In all, the teams combined to use 15 pitchers in the extra-inning affair with Stobart turning in the longest outing of any hurler. The junior tossed four frames of nine-hit, six-run ball and notched two of the 'Jacks' three strikeouts.
• Tyler Starks and Jesus Gamez logged two innings of work each with the latter getting charged with three runs (two of them earned) on five hits.
• Grabowske (1-2) suffered his second loss of the season and did not record an out in his relief appearance.
• UC Santa Barbara starter Jack Dashwood was not a factor in the decision and lasted three innings. In that span, he surrendered five hits and four runs - only one of which was of the earned variety.
• Relief arm Conner Dand (1-0) locked down his first win of the season by getting a strikeout with the bases loaded in the top of the 11th.
ON DECK
• SFA concludes its three-game series with the Gauchos Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.CT/1:00 p.m. PT. Freshman left-hander Jaxon Covington will make the start for the 'Jacks as the look for their first win over a top-25 team since the 2017 campaign.
