SFA's top-flight singles player provides team's lone point against Cowgirls
LAKE CHARLES, La. - SFA tennis junior Gabi Guilarte won her second singles match in as many tries, but her point was the only one the Ladyjacks were able to muster in a 6-1 setback to McNeese Friday afternoon at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
With the setback, SFA drops to 3-7 in Southland Conference action and has been eliminated from the Southland Conference Tournament picture. The best the Ladyjacks can possible finish in league play is 4-7 and does not hold a head-to-head tiebreaker against either Lamar or New Orleans. In the event of a three-way tiebreaker for seventh place between Lamar, New Orleans and SFA, both Lamar and New Orleans would own that tiebreaker due to the number of head-to-head sets won between the pool of three teams.
DOUBLES
• Darinka Tiboldi and Armelle Cerdan collected a 6-3 victory over Giovanna Fioretti and Carlotta Romito on the number-two line, but that was the only doubles point the Ladyjacks were able to capture.
• Guilarte and Kaja Ljubic dropped a 6-1 decision on the top line and in a third-set match that could have gone either way Nida Kamal and Kyndall Misak found themselves on the wrong end of a 7-6 score as the Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead.
SINGLES
• Guilarte battled back from a 6-1 setback to Fioretti in the opening set of the top-seeded singles match to earn the Ladyjacks' lone one-on-one victory. A 6-4 win by Guilarte tied things at one set apiece before she earned the victory with a 10-8 triumph in the deciding frame.
• Elsewhere in singles action it was all McNeese. Misak suffered a difficult 7-6, 6-4 loss to Romito in the sixth flight in what proved to be the closest other singles match of the afternoon.
• Kamal found herself on the wrong end of a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Dalia Ahmed on line five.
• Cerdan and Ljubic suffered 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3 setbacks on the third and fourth lines respectively.
• Tiboldi suffered a 6-1, 6-4 setback to Erlandsson in the number-two flight.
COMING UP NEXT
• SFA will conclude its season Sunday afternoon in Hammond, La., with a Southland Conference showdown at Southeastern Louisiana. First serve is set for noon.
