SFA suffers third consecutive setback, drops to 2-5 in Southland play
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Darinka Tiboldi scored a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over the Islanders' Kei Kato on the number-two singles line, but that was the only point the SFA tennis team came up with Sunday in its 4-1 Southland Conference loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club.
DOUBLES
• Two of the three doubles flights were decided by three games including Tiboldi and Armelle Cerdan's narrow 6-4 setback to Kato and Myu Kageyama on the second line.
• Kaja Ljubic and Gabi Guilarte scored a 6-3 win over the Islanders' top-line duo of Carolina Bulatovic and Mariya Shumeika to keep the Ladyjacks' hopes for winning the doubles point alive.
• The Islanders completed their clean sweep of the doubles point when Nida Kamal and Verz Carvalho suffered a 6-2 loss to Camille Townsend and Vanessa Reinicke in the third flight.
SINGLES
• Guilarte took on Bulatovic in the number-one flight but suffered a 6-2, 7-5 defeat.
• Tiboldi's singles win kept the Ladyjacks' hopes for victory alive, but in the middle singles flights the Islanders took over.
• Cerdan found herself on the wrong end of a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Townsend while Ljubic dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Shumeika in the number-four match.
• Carvalho and Kamal saw their matches go unfinished after the Islanders secured the four team points they needed to win the match.
COMING UP NEXT
• SFA wraps up its stretch of six consecutive matches away from home by heading down to Edinburg, Texas, for a Monday morning meeting with UTRGV. The non-conference tilt is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center.
SCOUTING UTRGV | ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATISTICS
• The Vaqueros will be hitting the courts for the first time in over a week when they match up with SFA in Edinburg.
• UTRGV is coming off of a dominant 6-1 WAC victory over Seattle.
• Dominique Ibarra has been as close of an automatic win as can be for UTRGV this season. She has put forth a 10-2 showing in singles matches while playing exclusively on the number one line. Ibarra is currently riding a 10-match winning streak in singles play.
• Those 10 singles wins represent nearly one-third of the Vaqueros' singles wins. Nethmi Waduge has picked up eight more of them with her 8-5 showing across lines four and five.
• Sandra Putz (5-6) is the only other UTRGV player who is close to being .500 or better in singles play. All 11 of her matches have taken place on the sixth line.
• In doubles action Ibarra and Marine Darzyan are 8-4 and have played only on the top line. Those eight wins are a little more than one-third of the Vaqueros' 21 doubles triumphs this season.
• Putz and Katarina Sasaroga have secured seven more doubles triumphs and are 7-6 overall.
