Ladyjacks take on 11-team tournament field, look to continue strong play after last week’s Red Rocks Invitational
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A week after carding the lowest three-round score in two years and third-lowest in program history, the SFA women's golf team returns to action for its final regular season tournament of the 2018-19 season. The Ladyjacks will compete in their sixth tournament held in the Lone Star State this season at the Lamar Cardinal Challenge, set for Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2 at the Beaumont Country Club in Beaumont, Texas.
The Format
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will get underway Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start as the opening day of play will feature both round one and round two. The final 18 holes of play will take place Tuesday morning with the third and final round set to begin once again at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun start.
The Course
The Beaumont Country Club, which has long been famous for towering pine trees that crowd narrow fairways, was completely renovated in 2004. Re-designed and reconstructed by Houston golf course architect, Baxter Spann, and Landscapes Unlimited, LCC, the par-71, 5,943-yard course features rolling fairways, deep fairway bunkers and undulating greens.
The Tournament Field
Eleven teams will be competing at the Beaumont Country Club this week with four other Southland Conference teams joining SFA and host Lamar, including Houston Baptist, Sam Houston State, the University of the Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The tournament field also includes Prairie View A&M, Illinois-Chicago, Texas State, UT Arlington and Texas Southern.
The Lineup
The Ladyjacks' lineup remains in-tact from its play last weekend at the Red Rocks Invitational in Arizona with junior Alexandra Batista and seniors Erica Lautensack and Jamee Jorgensen leading the way. Junior Paola Cortes and sophomore Kelly Yang will also be in action on the links this week in Beaumont.
Last Time on the Links
SFA shot a 54-over 906 on the Agave Highlands Golf Course in Cornville, Arizona, last weekend for the Ladyjacks' lowest three-round score since 2017 and third-lowest 54-hole total in program history. On the opening 18 holes of play, SFA nearly tied a two-and-a-half-year program record by shooting a 9-over 293 in the first round, coming one stroke of the 8-under 292 single round school record. The Ladyjacks improved their score by one stroke between the second and third rounds and carded a 22-over 306 in the final round to place 14th among a highly-competitive 18-team Red Rocks Invitational field, which was hosted by Northern Arizona. Batista posted her third-straight top-20 finish and set the program record for the lowest 54-hole score after turning in her second-lowest single round score of the season with a 2-under 69 in the third round. She tied for 17th among 104 total golfers with a career-low three-round tally of 3-over 216, the lowest 54-hole total by any SFA women's golfer in school history. Lautensack closed out the tournament with her second-lowest three-round score of 2018-19, tying her third-lowest 54-hole mark of her career with a 7-over 220.
Last Year in Beaumont
Played as a four-team match play event, the 2018 version of the Lamar Cardinal Challenge featured the host Cardinals, the Ladyjacks, South Alabama and A&M-Corpus Christi. SFA dropped both of its matches at the match play tournament, falling 4-1 to both South Alabama and A&M-Corpus Christi. Lautensack and Batista both picked up individual match wins at the event as Lautensack defeated South Alabama's Siti Shaari, 4 and 3, at the top spot in the Ladyjacks' first round, before Batista was a 1 up winner over A&M-Corpus Christi's Brooklyn Sutton in SFA's consolation contest.

The Ladyjacks will have two weeks off from tournament play before heading to Magnolia, Texas, for the 2019 Southland Conference Championship, held Monday-Wednesday, April 15-17 at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Club.
