Ladyjacks compete in the state of Arizona for the first time in program history, take on 18-team tournament field
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the first time in program history, the SFA women's golf team will be competing in the state of Arizona as the Ladyjacks are set to play in Northern Arizona's 14th annual Red Rocks Invitational Friday and Saturday, March 23-24. SFA's ninth tournament of the 2018-19 season and fourth this calendar year will be held at the Agave Highlands Golf Course in Cornville, Arizona, located about 100 miles north of Phoenix.
The Format
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will get underway Saturday morning with the opening 18 holes of play beginning at 10:30 a.m. CST with a shotgun start. A total of 36 holes will be played Saturday with round two taking place in the afternoon. Sunday, the third and final round will culminate the tournament as teams tee off once again at 10:30 a.m. CST in a shotgun start.
The Course
The Agave Highlands Golf Course plays as a par-71, 5,919-yard course located 3,300 feet above the Phoenix metropolitan area. Located in the Verde Valley across from the spectacular Mingus Mountain range, Agave Highlands features natural arroyos where four lakes border the 10th and 18th holes.
The Tournament Field
A total of 18 teams from across the nation will converge in Arizona for the Red Rocks Invitational as the Ladyjacks are the lone representative from the Southland Conference. Tournament host Northern Arizona will be joined by Drake, California Baptist, Cal State Fullerton, Creighton, Gonzaga, Idaho State, Illinois State, Montana, Montana State, New Mexico State, North Dakota State, Seattle, Southern Utah, Weber State, Wichita State and Wyoming.
The Lineup
Five different SFA golfers will be in action over the weekend with upperclassmen junior Alexandra Batista and senior Erica Lautensack leading the way. Fellow senior Jamee Jorgensen and junior Paola Cortes will also be competing, along with sophomore Kelly Yang.
Tee Times
Paired with Illinois State, Seattle and Southern Utah for Saturday's play, the Ladyjacks will tee off the first round at 10:30 a.m. on holes five through eight. Batista and Lautensack will both start on hole five, while Jorgensen tees off of hole six, Cortes from hole seven and Yang hole eight.
Last Time on the Links
SFA turned in its third-highest three-round score of 2018-19 thus far nearly two weeks ago at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Invitational in McAllen, Texas. Shooting a 65-over 929, the Ladyjacks posted their second-highest finish of the season by tying for fifth among 15 total teams. Tying the tournament's lowest third round score by carding a 13-over 301 on the final 18 holes of play, SFA rose two spots and finished just five strokes off of fourth-place tournament host UTRGV and 10 strokes ahead of fellow Southland member McNeese. Batista tied for 12th among 80 total golfers for her second-straight top-15 finish after carding a 54-hole total of 10-over 226. Cortes notched her best finish of the season by rising nine spots on the individual leaderboard in the final round, tying for 17th with a 16-over 232.
