LAFAYETTE, La. – The SFA softball team's offense and pitching were on full display Saturday evening inside Lamson Park in Lafayette, Louisiana, as the Ladyjacks run-ruled Jackson State 13-2 in five innings behind a no-hitter from junior right-handed pitcher Ashley Kriesel. The Galveston College transfer fanned a career-high 13 batters and registered a strikeout in all but two of SFA's 15 defensive outs recorded in the game.
Lining 11 hits, the Ladyjacks (8-2) scored four runs in the third inning thanks to junior North Texas transfer third baseman Lindsay Gregory's first career grand slam. SFA then used a six-hit, seven-run seventh inning to take a 11-run lead over the Lady Tigers (0-11) that it would not relinquish with Kriesel in the circle.
"Today we learned a lot about our team," head coach Nicole Dickson said after the run-rule victory completed Saturday's two games played at the 33rd Annual Louisiana Classic. "Today just reinforced our culture and expectations. Against Louisiana-Lafayette, we just didn't play clean and didn't execute, it was that simple. With the Ragin' Cajuns' speed and explosive offense you can't give away outs and free bases. I was proud of the way we were able to refocus after the loss to Louisiana in order to get the game two win."
"This evening really showed our maturing and positive progress," continued coach Dickson. "(Ashley) Kriesel controlled the game against Jackson State and had great mound composure, she really led from the circle this evening. Right now it's about developing a strong, determined mindset with the mission to get better every day and play as hard as you possibly can for the people around you."
Kriesel began the game by sitting down six-straight batters in order, giving her 12 consecutive strikeouts spanning back to her two-inning appearance in the 7-3 win over Jackson State Friday. A pair of Lady Tiger errors led to freshman designated player Cassidy Tucker singling to left field for an RBI as SFA took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Moments later redshirt sophomore center fielder Brittany Crawford recorded an RBI groundout as sophomore right fielder Bryana Novegil crossed home plate to make it a 2-0 game.
The Ladyjacks collected four hits with two outs in the bottom of the third, getting a pair of singles from Tucker and senior first baseman Margarita Corona before Crawford was hit by a pitch. Gregory stepped up to the plate and took a 1-2 pitch deep over the left field wall, her grand slam increasing the advantage to six.
Jackson State's only two runs of the evening came in the top of the fourth when a pair of errors in the infield led to a pair of unearned scores, before Kriesel was able to close out the frame with her 11th strikeout.
The first of seven SFA runs in the bottom of the fourth came when Tucker singled through the left side for her second RBI of the game. With only one out and following a Crawford single, Gregory grounded out for an RBI as Novegil scored to make it 8-2. A Lady Tiger wild pitch gave the Ladyjacks' their ninth run of the contest with Tucker reaching home plate, before freshman catcher Mackenzie Bennett singled to third base to bring in Crawford. Sophomore pinch hitter Triniti Kendzior doubled down the right field line to score freshman pinch runner Taylor Trosclair and give SFA a commanding 11-2 lead. The Ladyjacks' final two runs of the game came when freshman second baseman Alex Hedspeth doubled to third base for a pair of RBI.
Leaving just four base runners stranded, SFA was impressive on the base paths as three different Ladyjacks registered a stolen base.
Tucker completed the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored, while Bennett was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Gregory finished 1-for-3 with five RBI and a run and Hedspeth was 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Kriesel (2-1) needed just 88 pitches to strike out 13 of 20 batters faced and collect her second complete game win for the Purple and White.
The Lady Tigers' starter Elyssa Sanchez (0-3) took the loss after going three complete and giving up four earned runs without any strikeouts.
