Crawford Knocks Out Second Homer of the Weekend in 33rd Annual Louisiana Classic Title Game

Redshirt sophomore center fielder launches her second long ball of the tournament, Bryana Novegil collects RBI in 5-2 championship game setback
Holding the host team to six hits, SFA lined five of its own and made a comeback effort at Lamson Park in the top of the seventh inning when redshirt sophomore Brittany Crawford went yard for the second time of the weekend.
"I'm pleased with our players' effort today," head coach Nicole Dickson commented after the game. "They competed hard this afternoon and got better as a unit. I felt like we made adjustments on defense, had some great at bats and also had some fight playing from behind in the six and seventh innings. (Kassidy) Wilbur was solid through four and (Brittany) Crawford hit the ball hard all day. I thought (Bailey) Richards and (Lindsay) Gregory did a good job behind the dish as well. Although we didn't get the result we wanted today, I thought it was a solid weekend being able to go 3-2."
After two innings of play, only one combined hit had been made with the Ladyjacks getting runners in scoring position in the top of the second thanks to a walk and a Ragin' Cajun error. Unable to bring anybody across home plate in the frame, SFA took advantage of its opportunity in the top of the third. After a single to third base by junior left fielder Madison Clements and a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Emily Wolfe, freshman designated player Alex Hedspeth singled to first base to give the Ladyjacks runners in the corners with one out. Following a Hedspeth steal, second baseman Novegil singled to shortstop for an RBI to bring in Clements and give SFA a 1-0 lead.
Louisiana would respond in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff solo shot over the right center field fence by left fielder Julie Rawls. With the Ladyjacks getting only a single from junior North Texas transfer third baseman Lindsay Gregory in the top of the fourth, the home team would score four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a sizeable 5-1 advantage.
The Ragin' Cajuns led off the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back home runs. Rawls knocked out her second dinger of the contest, taking a 2-2 pitch deep over right field before first baseman Kourtney Gremillion cleared the right field fence on a 1-1 pitch. Just moments later, right fielder Sarah Hudek clobbered a one-out solo home run over center field to give Louisiana a 4-1 lead. Later in the inning after a pair of walks and a double steal, the Ragin' Cajuns got an RBI groundout from shortstop Alissa Dalton.
Louisiana's Carrie Boswell retired three SFA batters in order in the top of the sixth before the Ladyjacks led off the seventh with center fielder Crawford going the distance over center field to make it 5-2. SFA would get a walk and Clements would reach on a fielder's choice out but a second groundout in the inning ended any further chances for the Ladyjacks.
Crawford finished the game 1-for-2 with her RBI and run scored, while Clements was 1-for-3 with a run and Novegil 1-for-3 with her RBI. Freshman right-hander Kassidy Wilbur (5-2) threw four complete to begin the game and collected three strikeouts in the loss before junior Galveston College transfer righty Ashley Kriesel tossed two innings in relief.
The Ragin' Cajuns' Rawls went 2-for-2 in the game with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk as catcher Lexie Comeaux was 2-for-3 and Kourtney Gremillion 1-for-2 with an RBI, run scored and walk. Boswell (2-0) claimed the win inside the circle after not allowing a run in three and 2/3 innings of relief work.
