LAFAYETTE, La. – Despite holding the 13th-ranked team in the nation to seven hits, the SFA softball team fell victim to six errors in the field Saturday afternoon inside Lamson Park in Lafayette, Louisiana. A two-out RBI single up the middle by senior first baseman Margarita Corona highlighted the Ladyjacks' 9-1, six-inning setback at 33rd Annual Louisiana Classic host the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
SFA (7-2) notched four hits in the ballgame and saw the undefeated Ragin' Cajuns (9-0) commit just one error, while Louisiana capitalized on Ladyjack miscues and reached home plate in four of the six innings played.
A pair of early errors in the bottom of the opening inning led to the home team's first run of the game. After a leadoff single, the Ragin' Cajuns' Keeli Milligan rounded third and reached home plate for an unearned run on a throwing error in the outfield.
Louisiana would score a trio of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead with a pair of RBI groundouts and an Alissa Dalton RBI single to right field. In the bottom of the third, the Ragin' Cajuns increased their lead to 6-0 when right fielder Sarah Hudek singled to center field for an RBI and then scored an unearned run on a fielding error in the outfield.
With freshman right-hander Kassidy Wilbur finding her groove and allowing just two hits with two strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, SFA's offense heated up in the top of the fifth. Following a leadoff walk, freshman right fielder Alex Hedspeth was hit by a pitch and sophomore second baseman Bryana Novegil reached on a fielder's choice to advance Hedspeth to second. With two outs and two on, Corona stepped to the plate and took a 1-1 pitch up the middle to bring Hedspeth home for what proved to be the Ladyjacks' lone run of the contest. Freshman designated player Cassidy Tucker singled to third base to load the bases, but with two outs a groundout ended any chances of bringing more across home plate.
Although junior left fielder Madison Clements reached on a Ragin' Cajun fielding error in the op of the sixth, SFA was unable to get anything else going. The No. 13 ranked team in the country scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the game go final after just six and 1/3 innings of play.
Following a Ladyjack fielding error in the infield, Louisiana got a two RBI double to left center field from pinch hitter Casidy Chaumont before third baseman Kara Gremillion ended the contest with a RBI single to right center field.
Both Tucker and Clements ended the game 1-for-2 with a walk, while Corona finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Wilbur (5-1) took her first loss of her collegiate career after going five complete and recording three strikeouts. Freshman righty Kaelyn Roberts made her Ladyjack debut in the sixth inning, facing five batters in the frame.
The Ragin' Caujuns' Milligan went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk as Hudek was 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and Chaumont 1-for-1 with two RBI and a run. Louisiana right-handed starter Summer Ellyson (6-0) picked up her sixth win of 2019 after striking out three in four innings of work.
